These are the two regions Russia stated liberation by special operation was about. When they capture the entire region, and it is safe from continued Ukrainian shelling, this war can and will end.
I think I understand, now, why Russia supposedly put its “second string” troops into this, at the outset - they are getting paid, in rubles, the entire time it goes on.

There’s already a split among the elites, with the realists on the Council of Foreign Relations warning that continuing this war presages dire consequences for both Europe and the US. Biden’s team doesn’t want to give in for political and other purposes, but Europe isn’t onboard with this any longer, they are looking at an outright economic depression in 6 months if this continues. Biden wants to keep it going until after the midterms but that appears unlikely in my opinion. Reality will set in long before then.

L-chansk is on a hill with high value artillery positions . might take months to take that if a seige is necessary..I’m not buying this.
