pressure from the U.S. government urging Taiwan to decrease its focus on some advanced weapons procurement programs in favor of less flashy but potentially more combat-relevant initiatives.

Step back a second and consider this. We have the 2nd Amendment in the US. Despite all the gun laws and leftist advances, we have more weapons that citizens. It is a major deterrent to any invasion. May I suggest going against the pressure from the U.S. government (read that as morons from the State Dept. and woke generals from the Pentagon) and issue every able body Taiwanese citizen an AK-47 and 20,000 rounds of ammo (enough to burn out the barrel of the AK). Add to that crate of grenades and one anti-armor weapon per household. That is a deterrent.

Pressure from the U.S. also put a halt to the Taiwanese nuclear-weapons program.

In 1976–77, the IAEA inspected the activities at the military-run Institute for Nuclear Energy Research. The IAEA discovered discrepancies in the Taiwanese program, and in 1976, the United States protested the nuclear-weapons program. In response, the island government promised to “henceforth not engage in any activities relating to reprocessing.”

I’ve been saying the same thing for years about the Baltic States. Arm the Balts and Estonians and Russia will never invade.
