Society, whatever that consists of, needs to recognize, applaud, appreciate and not belittle these weirdoes who carve a new niche in the bedrock on which our civilization rests.

Being weird is something that juveniles normally outgrow by the time they reach puberty, assuming they are raised in a normal household.
Those who don't have alternative means of expressing themselves without being hostile to the general public.
It's called a psychiatric hospital these days, in recognition that it's a medical condition that may be remedied with the right care.
For the federal government to bestow any recognition, much less protection by law to such individuals--similar to those often futile efforts to preserve endangered species of plants and animals--is a terrible misuse of scarce resources, e.g., police and the courts, with little or no benefit to society as a whole.
