The Corsairs and Barbary pirates were raiding Europe for slaves in the 1500s so she’s technically correct.

400 years is 1619 crap.

She didn’t botch it, it’s these usurpist’s belief.

They don’t believe the U.S. even exists and it’s all the same colonialism and imperialism etc...

Using that figure we’re talking about 365 years. Of course
you are touching on European slaves in part, rather than
African slaves. She’d probably be happy to include those
years as long as nobody raised your point.

One could use the 1619 figure and that would equate to 246
years.

But if we focus on the U. S. involvement, we’re talking
about 1776 to 1865, which was around 89 years.

It doesn’t make it any less impactful for African slaves,
but the last figure is the one that the U. S. should be
accountable for.

1619 to 1865, is 246 years, so she’d be wrong even if she
did use the 1619 figure.

The first African slaves in what became the American colonies arrived in 1619 in Virginia.

This statement is inaccurate. Whites and blacks arrived in the colonies at this time as indentured servants. They served as laborers on farms and plantations and were granted plots of land upon completion of their contract.

A 1640 court decision in Virginia punished John Punch, a black man and runaway indentured servant, to lifetime servitude (the landowner in this case was also black, a former indentured servant). John Punch is considered the first slave in the English colonies.

And then in 1661, Virgina became the first colony to legalize slavery. So slavery was legal in the American English colonies or United States for 204 years (1661 to 1865).

“A White House official acknowledged Harris’ error, telling The Post that “the vice president was referring to 400 years since slavery began.””

Slavery began thousands of years ago. Warring tribes enslaved members of tribes they conquered. Slavery was common in ancient civilized countries. The Israelites were slaves in Egypt (per the Bible). Slavery was common in ancient Greece and Rome. Serfdom in the Dark and Middle Ages in Europe was a form of involuntary servitude. Arabs enslaved people before Mohammed and Muslims continued the practice in north Africa. In sub Saharan Africa tribes battled and the losers were enslaved. Many Africans who traveled to the New World were enslaved by African slave traders before those slave traders sold them to the Europeans.

Indigenous people in the Americas practice not only slavery, they practice human sacrifice.

The truth is white Europeans practiced slavery. It is also true western civilization (white Europeans) recognized the evil of slavery and abolished it in the western world during the 18th and 19th centuries. Slavery continues to be practiced in other parts of the world today. Kamala Harris decries an alleged “400 years” of whites enslaving blacks and indigenous peoples in North America, yet ignores sex slavery by cartels trafficking humans across the United States southern border. No outrage. Not even a tear.

"VP Harris botches Juneteenth history lesson about ‘400 years of slavery’"

.... What would Harris know about the history of the Emancipation of Slaves? ... Heck ... She's a Democrat .... The party of Slavery and the KKK ..... Surprised Republicans don't make a bigger deal about Juneteenth .... Use it as a great historical teaching moment for the country ....

There’s been slavery in the Americas for 10,000 years or more.

“1619 to 1865, is 246 years, so she’d be wrong even if she
did use the 1619 figure.”

Yes.

They say 400 years all the time.

It’s their mantra. I think to the extent they bother to try to account for it they mean from 1492.
