They were humiliated by the United States. The president threatened to collapse their economies. The US was intent on destroying colonialism. Simply points out that Europe's problem remains the same as it has been since the late 19th century: the jockeying for power among the largest European states promotes instability and internal rivalries that prevent any effective, unified policy.

NATO is still necessary because there is no other security framework for Europe that provides the possibility of unified action because the European powers will sell each other out in a heartbeat for economic or strategic advantage. The US still has an interest because allowing Russia (or China) to gain unlimited access to Europe's wealth and technology would be a strategic disaster for the US.

I have absolutely no doubt that France's and Germany's preferred solution to the Ukraine war is to allow Ukraine to be annexed by Russia and to give Russia a sphere of influence over the former Warsaw Pact countries. Unluckily for them, the Eastern Europeans have both the will and the means to resist.
