The Uvalde City Council in Texas will consider imposing a leave of absence on school police chief and councilman Peter Arredondo later Tuesday.
Uvalde Mayor Don McGlaughlin is also scheduled to hold a press conference following Tuesday night's city council meeting. The meeting will be the council's first full session since a gunman killed 19 children and two teachers at Robb Elementary School in late May.
Arredondo was the on-scene commander for the police response to the shooting, and he has come under intense scrutiny as more details of the response reach the public.
Arredondo and other officers responded within three minutes of shooter Salvador Ramos beginning his rampage, but did not breach the door to the pair of classrooms for more than an hour.
They initially claimed the door had been locked and they had to wait for a key, but Col. Steve McCraw, director of the Texas Department of Public Safety, testified Tuesday that the door had, in fact, been unlocked the entire time.

Just long enough for every cop on site to kill themselves. Hopefully.
Leave of abscence? He should have been fired that afternoon and brought up on charges
What is matthew mick what’s his name doing whining about anything but this as a Uvalde townie.
Typical way Democrats treat someone caught with their hand in the cookie jar ... leave of absence (probably paid) ... let things cool off ... sneak back when interest wears off.
Too often these “leave of absences” are paid... i.e. a paid vacation.
Step one.
Step two, he’s not returning.
Even the city counsel are pussies.
Just fire him!!
How about charging all 19 cops there as “Accessories” to 19 counts of homicide?
They not only refused to do their job, they handcuffed, arrested and pepper sprayed parents who attempted to do their job for them.
That is not a passive gesture, that is working to protect a serial murderer.
It’s a start. A month ago this mayor was defending Arredondo and saying statements by Lt. Governor Dan Patrick that he was ‘not told the truth’ are not true
The mayor is playing CYA. This isn’t going to end well for city, ISD, county, or state government. The lawsuits are going to be EPIC. Hopefully we’ll see some criminal negligence charges, but qualified immunity is raising its head.
With pay no doubt.
Not a single person involved in this event had the honor or guts to resign.
If Arredumbo had any honor, he’d commit Seppuku.
How did this guy get hired for the job?
Let’s hope the city is not going to pay the legal fees for these cowards.
That is not a passive gesture, that is working to protect a serial murderer.
Yup.
And to make sure as many kids were killed as possible.
Beto O'Rourke pal Peter Arredondo has plenty of “splaining” to do.
Going into hiding so he can’t be grilled on who ordered him to stand down.
Paid leave, I bet.
