After Senators John Cornyn (R-TX) and Chris Murphy (D-CT) finally released the text of their new gun bill — the "Bipartisan Safer Communities Act" — on Tuesday, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) quickly rushed to hold the first procedural vote on the legislation within an hour of the text going public and before many senators had a chance to digest the full 80-page bill.
Tuesday night's vote prevailed 64 to 34, but the speed with which Schumer moved to a vote drew the ire of those who prefer to study legislation before voting on it, including GOP Senator Josh Hawley of Missouri who voted "no" on Tuesday evening.
Republican Senator Tom Cotton of Arkansas, who also voted no, released a statement explaining that "[t]his bill won’t stop the violent shootings by deranged criminals. But it will restrict the freedoms of law-abiding Americans and put too much power in the hands of politicians and political officials," Cotton said. "Stopping gun violence starts with more funding for police and tougher sentences for the criminals who violate gun laws—not taking away due process from law-abiding gun owners."
Utah GOP Senator Mike Lee tweeted that "process matters" and also highlighted the rushed process of Tuesday's procedural vote: "With only moments to review, no committee hearings, and no regular order, a vote was held with implications concerning an essential constitutional right. The American people deserve better from the world's 'greatest deliberative body.'"

The Constitution has been a relic in a glass case since Usurpation Day.
Conservatives conveniently wheel out the constitution on special occasions and wave it around to the delight of the Republican rubes. It’s an act that works with great effect.
The day draws nigh.
So, they simply closed their eyes and voted for this unconstitutional mess and hope no one remembers or holds them accountable?
Sadly, right before their re-election efforts, they’ll find the constitution, get real conservative, pander to the base, get re-elected then revert to RINO form.
It apparently works every time..
Demonicrats and RINOcrats are traitors down to bone.
It would be awesome if the supremes delivered a ruling on Thursday such that this gun grabbing bill is a dead letter.
The NRA....MUST GO! T hey will never get another penny from me.
Bump
From your comment, I get the very strong impression that you do not value or see our Constitution as something that deserves defending and preserving.
Do we even make it to November? And will it even matter by then?
Geeeez that sounds familiar. Sign it so you can read it scenario. HITAF can anyone with a conscience sign something they have no............. Oh. Never mind. Conscience required to start with.
I dumped them years ago.
And, the recent school shooting in Uvalde Texas is unravelling quickly after precipitating this latest outrage and gun grab. So why the urgency. These congress people have no shame!
November is NOT going to matter, how many times have we given these bastards the house and the senate and they have done NOTHING but whine about needing the WH too!! WELL we gave them the house, senate AND WH and what did they do with it, GAVE US THE MIDDLE FINGER!! Everyone thinking that November is going to CHANGE one damn thing is dreaming, these bastards are working with Biden MORE than they EVER worked with Trump THAT IS A FACT!!!
As if there are options on the ballot. The choice is always lesser of two evils, and the lesser one need be only slightly, marginally different.
They all believe that government is the solution, and more government is better. It is, for them.
At any rate when the ballot is all “your people” (and the senate is highly congenial, they would all vote for each other), then “your people” will certainly win.
So much for a representative form of government. What we have is a royal class governing the masses.
Stop talking and start acting, blow their phones up! I have called a number already!
