Russia warns Norway over restricting supplies to settlements on Svalbard
Reuters ^ | 29-JUN-2022

Posted on 06/29/2022 7:05:53 AM PDT by SpeedyInTexas

Russia said on Wednesday that restrictions imposed by Norway were blocking the transport of goods to Russian-populated settlements on the Arctic archipelago of Svalbard and called on Oslo to resolve the issue as soon as possible or face consequences.

The ministry said that it summoned Norway's Chargé d'Affaires to protest the restrictions, which it said were blocking the transport of food and medical equipment.

Svalbard is part of Norway, although Russia has the right to exploit the archipelago's natural resources under a treaty signed in 1920 and maintains a diplomatic presence in the largely Russian- and Ukrainian-populated settlement of Barentsburg.

I can remember when blocking food and medicines from a civilian population was considered a war crime.

Putin’s standard is that whereever there’s a russian, there’s an excuse for an invasion.

“I can remember when blocking food and medicines from a civilian population was considered a war crime.”

I can remember when invading a sovereign country was against international law.

Apply that to our Southern border and get back to us.

It would be nice if they reported what Norway was actually doing or failing to do, instead of printing a Russian allegation. Readers would then be able to decide if Norway’s behavior was reasonable.
It’s not as if Russian diplomats have a reputation for honesty.

“Apply that to our Southern border and get back to us.”

When I’m President I will. Until then we are stuck with this gang of chowderheads.

“It’s not as if Russian diplomats have a reputation for honesty.”

To some around here lately the Russians are paragons of virtue who are not to be questioned.

And that’s why the logical response for every European nation is nation is to deport every single person who claims Russian citizenship. And then the next logical step for them is to prohibit Russian language documents and schooling in their jurisdictions.

Your analogy simply doesn’t apply. China does not own Guam nor does the Soviet Union own any portion of Norway.

“restrictions imposed by Norway were blocking the transport of goods to Russian-populated settlements on the Arctic archipelago of Svalbard”

Svalbard is NORWEGIAN territory. If the Russians there don’t like it, they can pack up and GO HOME.

“was considered a war crime”

Norway and Russia are not at war, and Svalbard is not Russian territory. The Russians there are free to leave any time they want if they don’t like Norwegian hospitality.

Pff, you say “our border” like you are an American.

Play acting like an American when it’s convenient, then condemning all that we do in the next breath. Don’t think we don’t notice your hypocrisy.

Is Guam Chinese territory?

No?

Then’s it’s nothing like that.

There’s a Russian coal mine, now closed, next to Svalbard. There are still Russians there to guard it and serve the tourist trade. Yes, there’s scheduled air service to the region, that’s as far north 78 degrees as you can go.
