China has grip on US higher education despite closure of Confucius Institutes

Republican lawmakers called on the Biden administration to monitor Chinese influence in higher education better after a report detailed that a number of universities had reorganized cooperation agreements with the Chinese government.

Earlier this month, the National Association of Scholars showed how a number of Chinese government-funded Confucius Institutes had reorganized and were still largely functional even as the universities claimed they had closed the centers.

Under the Trump administration, the Chinese cultural centers had drawn significant scrutiny due to their ties to the Chinese Communist Party. The national security concerns voiced by government officials ultimately led most colleges to shutter their Confucius Institutes.

But the conservative advocacy group's new report details how even though universities may have closed their Confucius Institutes on paper, many had simply reorganized their partnerships with Chinese universities and the Chinese government and were still operating nearly identical programs. The report particularly highlights the closures of Confucius Institutes at the University of Washington, Arizona State University, Purdue University, and Western Kentucky University.

"In no cases are we sufficiently confident to classify any university as having fully closed its Confucius Institute," the NAS report says. "All four of our case study institutions showed evidence of continued collaboration with the Chinese government. Of the additional 100 colleges and universities that have closed a CI, our research could not confirm a single complete closure of the Confucius Institute."

From one of the linked articles about the Confucius Intitutes being closed…
The Chinese Communist Party-linked Confucius Institutes are collapsing in the United States, falling from over 100 to just over a couple dozen in a few years thanks to pressure from the Trump administration and growing concern within the U.S. government about the challenge posed by Chinese influence at U.S. colleges and universities.
We all know what that means. If Trump did it, Brandon will undo it which means MORE cooperation w China.

Chicom coercion funds colleges, sports, politicians, media and especially out NGOs.

Like having poison in our veins. It should be criminalized.

Yes. The other day on the radio I heard a letter from an Ann Arbor woman who wrote of how the local professors were known for openly mocking anyone who confessed Christ as Lord.

China thinks in terms of long-term benefits, and that is why they have a "30 year plan", and a "50 year plan".
The Chinese economic policy of "Belt and Roads" is a long term plan and concept of taking economic and political control over a country.
The Confucius Institutes are a way of this country investing in Chinese students, developing talents, skills and advanced research at the expense of the host country,
while financially co-opting the educational system similar to "Belt and Roads" economic concept does politically to third-world countries.
Ignore the long term plans of China, and you deny the fact that China recently bought, and hoards, a 1 1/2 years supply of food and grains,
before the recent world-wide fertilizer, petroleum, and agricultural crisis.
Think of the Confucius Institutes as a Chinese colony to learn advanced research in various educational areas, without native investment,
and promote the Chinese philosophy and ideology among the highly educated and future government leaders.
Chinese Philosophy :"Keep you friends close,.. and your enemies closer !"

An acquaintance of mine had to leave a phd program here in the US because the advisor would not approve dissertation topics highlighting Chinese colonization of Africa. Advisor even blackballed him so no other professor in the department would take over as advisor.
