Russia is set to switch off the gas for work on a key pipeline — and Germany fears the worst

Russia is poised to temporarily shut down the European Union’s single biggest piece of gas import infrastructure, stoking fears of a delayed or only partial return of gas supplies.

Some fear the Kremlin could use planned maintenance works to turn off the taps for good.

“If it doesn’t come back after maintenance because President Putin plays games or wants to hit Europe while it hurts, then the plan to fill up gas storage by the end of summer will probably not work,” said Eurasia Group’s Henning Gloystein.

Good. Sometimes lessons need to be learned the hard way. The EU should have listened to Trump.

They were so smug and laughed at Trump when he told them this would happen.

actually i think russia intends to continue doing business with germany when this is over, and factions in germany intend to as well.

the planned maintenance is being used for press purposes. apparently this happens every year.

I think germany is split on this, arm was twisted by the US but they had developed close ties to russia economically since cold war. heck, russia bought a couple of their heads of state, one quite openly.

Russia’s lying about the ‘work’. Fact is nothing works in Russia. They need the pipeline to work but they’re so used to disruptions a planned one doesn’t pass the smell test.

In 1944, Treasury Secretary, Henry Morgenthau, suggested to President Roosevelt a post-surrender program for Germany that included elimination of its arms industry and removal or destruction of all industrial plants, reducing Germany to an agrarian-based economy. FDR considered the Morgenthau Plan, but ultimately decided against it. 75 years later, Germany is embarking on its own Morgenthau Plan.

If the German Greens would rather burn coal and take cold showers than turn Nordstream-2 back on, so be it.

The Germans can always get LNG for 8-10 times as much as piped natgas, imported through non-existent LNG receiving terminals...

Maybe they should open Nordstream 2 and unfreeze Russian assets and quit sending weaponry to Ukraine. Otherwise I guess they can freeze and watch factories shut down.

Fascinating history. Morgenthau went on to NYC politics, in a big way. Thanks.

Where would you rather be at midnight walking on the street?

Vladivostok or Chicago?

We are hardly ones to be talking about things that “don’t work” in Russia.
