In a move its own Diversity Curriculum Committee has heralded as “unprecedented,” Northern Arizona University will soon mandate students take four diversity, equity and inclusion courses grounded in “critical theory” to earn a degree.
The new grad requirement is scheduled to take effect in 2024 at the large public university, located in the progressive city of Flagstaff and enrolling some 29,000 students.
The four diversity courses must come from the categories of “global diversity,” “indigenous peoples,” “intersectional identities,” and “U.S. ethnic diversity,” according to an internal memo from campus administrators.
The 12 credits of diversity requirements were approved in October 2021 as part of the university’s updated General Studies Program, reported John Sailor in City Journal.
“These Diversity Perspectives courses must … embrace the philosophical underpinning of identity politics,” reported Sailor, a research associate at the National Association of Scholars.
“According to notes from the university’s Liberal Studies Committee, foreign language courses fail to qualify for diversity designation. Why? ‘Because they do not incorporate critical theory which the [Diversity Curriculum Committee] expects of the courses it approves.’”
The course requirements are the implementation of a Diversity Strategic Plan drafted in Fall 2020 which “focuses and prioritizes the university’s attention and resources around diversity, inclusion, and a culturally competent environment for all.”
While the plan called for an increase of 20 percent of students taking DEI courses, the General Studies requirements approved by the Arizona Board of Regents on October 1, 2021 apply to all students.

I’m so glad I finished w/ NAU 40 years ago. I could see it coming back then, though.
My son is a soph at Cal State. He needs 3: ethnic studies, world studies, and diversity studies. He met the world studies requirement by studying Caribbean steel drums music. Pretty fun actually. But useless. And it takes up space for more interesting and useful electives like, say, Econ.
He’s a computer science major. It’s just hoops to jump through. Neither he nor I voted for this.
That’s two years from now. I am optimistic enough to bet that by autumn of 2024, that 4 Diversity Class requirement will have been lowered, at least by 2 classes.
I think we are now living through Peak-Wokeness in America.
The first clue was weeks ago, when some female swimmers were no longer afraid what Twitter would say, when the girls said in their opinion, Team Swimmers should be on the team of their biological birth.
A second clue is we are suddenly hearing from several formerly Trans people who are ‘de-transitioning’.
We are hearing more about college staff who are suing for wrongful termination, after being told they must accept and promote CRT in the classrooms, and being fired when they did not. This group too is no longer always invisible.
If you’re going to justify charging kids 6 figures to get a degree in grievance studies, you’re going to need for them to have some jobs to aim for - looks like Northern Arizona has come up with the way to do that (others to follow soon).

I’d never hire one of their graduates.
I recall when handing in my my final exam in a psychology class, saying this is pure bullshit, but you will pass me.
I earned an A- in that course.

The Arizona legislature could put the kibosh on such cultural Marxist overreach since that’s a state university. Somebody first needs to bring it to their attention. Something similar happened in Oklahoma. The University of Oklahoma in Norman was making new freshmen take an out and out black supremacy class. White students had to “prove” how “racist” they were (classic Maoist self criticism) to pass the course. Make Oklahoma Great Again brought it to state lawmakers’ attention since OU belongs to the State of Oklahoma.
It should; that is technically a full-time semester (12 credits) of pandering just to give people with no marketable skills high-paying jobs teaching those courses.
We don’t live in a bubble, but there is no reason why students who often have little knowledge of American history should be learning about tiny sub-groups.
