Europe Is Faking Solidarity, and Putin Knows It

The 27 national leaders of the European Union love to extol the solidarity that binds their countries together. Even the words signal destiny. “Union” comes via French from the Latin unus for “one,” and solidarity from solidus for “firm, whole and undivided.” Like a good marriage, the bloc is meant to be a solidarity union.

In reality, it is no such thing, and Europe’s enemies know it. That includes Russian President Vladimir Putin and autocrats in China and afield. The EU’s biggest problem is the inability to see threats, responsibilities and sacrifices as shared.

Right now, the nail-biting is about Putin — both his physical warfare against Ukraine and his hybrid warfare against the EU. His weapon of choice is energy. Putin spent two decades making the EU vulnerable — that is, dependent on Russian natural gas and other hydrocarbons — by building a network of pipelines to gullible nations such as Germany. This year, following his invasion of Ukraine in February, he’s cocked these weapons and put his finger on the trigger.

Putin spent two decades making the EU vulnerable

Europeans spent two decades engaging in green-utopian-globohomo-money-printing fantasies. They would face a reckoning one way or another.

There’s a reason the USA outran the rest of the world for decades. Russia figured it out, it was easy. Europe never learns anything, and has doomed itself.

By being dumb Europe allowed China and Russia to get stronger and more important on the world economic stage.

Remember that photo of Trump sitting with all of Europe’s leaders with his arms folded while they stared at him in anger over him not going along with their common suicide pact?

Good times.

“Europeans spent two decades engaging in green-utopian-globohomo-money-printing fantasies. They would face a reckoning one way or another.”

So true; but equally true for us.

The EU leadership with few exceptions is totally incompetent. It is actually hard to believe that none of them understood the ramifications of their “biggest sanctions program in history” prior to turning a loaded gun on themselves.

It wouldn’t matter even if they were willing to equitably share the misery. They still would be losing.

This whole debacle is a great demonstration of why a multi-polar world will be a benefit for all nations. “America First” for America; “Germany First” for Germany; “Hungary First” for Hungary. Leaders should act for the benefit of their own citizens.

Cathy, you are repeating Putin’s propaganda why a multi-polar world will be a benefit for all nations

So you support a China first policy for china to get vladivostok?
And a Mongolia first policy for it to get back all of Asian Russia?
