GOP’s Meijer voted to impeach Trump. Now Democrats are helping his Trump-backed GOP primary opponent
The Washington Post ^ | July 27, 2022 | Colby Itkowitz

Eighteen months ago, Rep. Peter Meijer joined just nine other House Republicans and voted to impeach Donald Trump. This week, he learned that the Democrats he stood with then were spending nearly half a million dollars to help his Trump-backed challenger defeat him.

“I assumed it might happen,” Meijer, a 34-year-old freshman Republican from Michigan, said in a Tuesday interview. The “high-minded rhetoric” of his Democratic colleagues, he added, had been “translated into galling hypocrisy” by a party committee running ads to boost John Gibbs, a former Trump administration official who baselessly claimed in an interview that the 45th president’s defeat in 2020 looked “mathematically impossible.”

Desperate to retain control of Congress in November in the face of stiff political head winds, the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee has become the latest party entity this election year to aid a Trump-endorsed Republican in a primary against a candidate who has resisted the former president. The $435,000 investment calls Gibbs “too conservative” in ads and highlights his connection to Trump — a winking message meant to boost his appeal to conservative primary voters.

The DCCC’s investment in Michigan’s 3rd District — which was redrawn in the decennial redistricting process to become more Democratic — marks the first time the House Democratic campaign arm put money behind an ad interfering in a GOP primary. The investment is more than the $334,000 that Gibbs has spent on his own campaign.

“Obviously, our focus is on winning 218 seats, and each race will require a slightly different strategy,” DCCC Chair Sean Patrick Maloney (D-N.Y.) told NBC News. “We think this makes sense in this case.”

The Obama 2008 Vote Fraud detection tool shows exactly where they rigged the 2020 "election".

The way this is playing out helps Meijer. Lotta congressional Dems bashing their party leadership over this. The optics back Meijer’s public response on the issue.

Now if we could only get Trumpist influence out of state GOP leadership.....

Funny that they should mention the 2020 "election" here - where Michigan Republican strongholds Kent County and Ottawa County "turned out" amazing totals for Basement Joe - Biden actually handily winning the heart of Michigan Republicanism, Grand Rapids and Kent County.

What's odd is that a solid blue county that is a Democrat stronghold that borders Kent and Ottawa to the north almost fell to Trump, 45,643 to 45,133.

But Muskegon is just outside the comfortable driving radius of the Kent County ballot mules...

The Michigan Republicans in the state legislature were in on The Steal.

The "tell"? - they haven't had Catherine Engelbrecht and True The Vote in for a legislative hearing show-and-tell.

The other dirty states, Georgia and Pennsylvania, haven't either.

You replaced a guy who couldn’t run for reelection, because he was a neverTrumper, then you are surprised that you shouldn’t have voted for his impeachment?

Grand Rapids is a different place culturally. If Trump had conducted his private life more carefully GR probably would have voted for him.

There was no skulduggery in Kent/Ottawa.

There was no skulduggery in Kent/Ottawa.

There was a ballot mule "loop" from GR to Holland to northern Allegan County, and back to GR.

Muskegon County was outside the "loop", so its numbers were normal - Trump almost beating Basement Biden in a BLUE county.

There was no skulduggery; no steal. Trump’s demographics look different because his appeal is different. If the tradeoff results in a winning electoral coalition then great.

There are a lot of normally GOP voters in the GR metro area who can’t stand Trump. I may be a metro Detroiter but personal circumstances had our family spending time in Kent/Ottawa over the last decade plus. When you absorb the gestalt of the place it’s not hard to understand why many of them don’t like Trump.

Fighting Meijer is a complete waste of time & money. And Trumpist GOP leadership in the state is hurting in other races as well. Especially the AG race where Trumpists picked a sure loser over a viable candidate well liked by actual GOP officeholders - you know, the folks who actually *win* elections?

I don't think you understand - but you're probably an old fogey who has trouble with numbers [innumeracy].

You probably earnestly believe that there was a "blue wave" in Michigan in 2018 that propelled Wretched wHitler into the governorship.

ACTUALLY, the "blue wave" in Michigan was ONLY in the red counties.

There was no blue wave in the blue counties in 2018.

Coincidentally, a "voting group" got hold of the 2016 ballots from every county in summer 2018.

Well, except for the Michigan blue counties, which told the people asking for the records that they could get them in January 2019.

No worries! "Record 2018 turnout" beating Hillary's numbers in the red counties where they got the 2016 ballots.

A slump in turnout in the blue counties.

After that excellent little exercise, they were able to REALLY put on the dog in Michigan in 2020, with more massive "turnout" in the red counties - but with tepid turnout in the blue counties.

That's why Michigan handily "beat" Trump, where Wisconsin and Pennsylvania had to scramble.

The Michigan Democrats had taken care of the "Hillary problem" in 2018.

If Meijer is the most conservative GOP candidate who can hold that seat then I’m fine with him.

I’ve got a friend from HS who’s running a more Trumpist campaign for Congress in the middle of the state. If he can pull it off then I’m fine with him too.

Dems are boosting Gibbs because they think he’ll be easier to beat than Mejier in the general.
