The conflict is that liberals view conservatives as either libertarians, neoconservatives, or fascists. All of those bastardized versions of “conservatism” are very ideological.
The conflict is that liberals view conservatives through the words of abject liars, but they also prefer those lies over the truth because that is what virtue signaling is all about: finding someone to point the finger at so they can look good by comparison. They find ways to make it true: if conservatives believe in tradition, it means they are closed minded and bigoted. If they believe in limited government, it means they hate the poor. If they believe in absolute moral values, it means they are judgmental and mean.
