Although I disagree with abortion, I believe it’s a state issue not federal so if that’s what the voters decide so be it.

Does the same standard apply to, say, slavery?

That’s a completely different issue. The Emancipation Proclamation basically outlawed slavery for those states that stillchad slaves. Congress then acted to codify that with legislation. That legislation also is how the feds are able to crackdown on sex trafficking which is a form of slavery. To answer your question though, I guess in general if a person subscribes to support the Constitution and States rights I suppose there’s an argument for a state to endorse slavery. Would that happen in the USA today? Certainly not. Do I support slavery? NO. do I endorse abortion? NO. It all boils down to a states rights issue for me. This issue was brought to the voters, they endorsed it so if I lived there and didn’t like that I’d move to a more friendly state to my ideals.

If so, then you need to ask the same about direct election of senators, women's franchise, voting age of 18, and due incorporation of due process/equal protection.

All my life I've heard this insipid argument that the existence of slavery negates the doctrine of states rights. States rights exist within the constitutional framework to which the states yielded certain sovereignties. Until 1865, slavery was not one of them.

Imagine had the US Constitution specifically legalized slavery, thus all states had to allow it. Now you can see how stupid an argument it is that slavery negates states rights.

Not since we passed an amendment, no. Before that, yes.

Our Constitution has a specific amendment banning slavery. I think the Supreme Court was saying that our Constitution is silent on abortion, so it should be up to the states.
