Historically, the position of the VP is a dead end. Theodore Roosevelt became the VP because they wanted him out of the way. No one predicted that McKinley would get assassinated.

And the "elite" class that was running everything back then was shocked that Teddy would use the office of the Presidency against their interests. He came from their ranks, but he was quite principled in his ideas.

I suspect it was his time in the West that taught him a different way to see the world. A more ethical way.
