Ukraine says Russia plans to disconnect nuclear plant's power blocks from grid

KYIV, Aug 19 (Reuters) - Ukraine's Energoatom state nuclear company said on Friday Russian forces planned to switch off the functioning power blocks at the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant and to disconnect them from the Ukrainian power grid.

In a statement, Energoatom said it believed Russia, which controls the power plant in southern Ukraine, was preparing to conduct a "large-scale provocation" there. Moscow itself accused Kyiv of preparing a "provocation" at the site on Thursday.

Turning the plant off would pile new pressure on Ukrainian supplies, particularly in the south. Ukraine is already bracing for its most difficult winter since independence and preparing for a possible energy shortage.

Each side of the conflict has blamed the other for reported shelling of the power plant. Understandably, many around the world are concerned about what might happen should the plant continue to suffer military attacks.

Russia controls the region where the power plant is housed. If Russia does shut down the plant, that could be a first step towards minimizing it as a target for either side.

Shutting it down just stops power going into the grid. It's still a nuclear power plant...and shutting it down does not eliminate all the dangers of a power plant.

Neither side wants to target it...unless they're really, really stupid.

Winter is coming, for both Ukraine and the EU.

“Russia controls the region where the power plant is housed. If Russia does shut down the plant, that could be a first step towards minimizing it as a target for either side.”

As I understand it, the Russians plan to disconnect the power plant from the Ukrainian grid (which has now been integrated/merged with the EU’s power grid) and connect it to the Russian grid. Southern and eastern Ukrainian electric power will be part of the Russian grid and southern/eastern Ukrainians will get their electricity from the southern Ukraine power plants.

Imagine that… southern Ukraine will get its electrical power from southern Ukraine power plants. Northern and western Ukraine will get their electricity from northern and western Ukraine power plants.

Zelensky doesn’t like this of course. He’s currently selling huge amounts of VERY EXPENSIVE electricity (but “free” to him) to the EU countries for rivers of hard cash. Those sales and those constant flows of money will have to end.

Unknown and/or unmentioned by many is that this particular nuclear power plant generates power for not only Ukraine, but for parts of the EU as well.

"Uwaga Tovarishchi

Do not listen to Western Propaganda. There is no risk of damage to Zaporozhye Nuclear GRES.

Kremlin, in consultation with Rosatom and Uranium One, is conducting test of the glorious Soviet VVER-1000 reactor design to see if it works without backup power to cooling pumps.

Our Red Army technicians have determined that best way to disable cooling pumps is with explosives."
