Its a weird thing they always repeat - that its “institutions”, mainly government ones, but many others outside of it, that “hold up democracy”.

This is bizarre. Even non-democratic nations have the same institutions. They are required to uphold nation-states, whatever their form of government. In other words the basic thrust of this argument is a lie.
