Russian war dissident Roizman detained in Yekaterinburg

He was one of the last remaining prominent opposition politicians in Russia who hadn't been killed, arrested, or forced out of the country.

As Yevgeny Roizman was being led out of his flat by police this morning, a waiting journalist asked him why he was being charged.

"Just for one phrase," said Mr Roizman, 59, "'The invasion of Ukraine.'"

He has had a serious criminal case opened against him for "discrediting the Russian armed forces".

It is a common charge used against anti-war activists in Russia. Even using the words "war" or "invasion" here can lead to a visit from the police.

Mr Roizman could face five years in prison if convicted, Russian state media reported. Police carried out searches in the opposition politician's flat and the office of his charity fund. Later, the interior ministry said he would be taken to Moscow whilst under investigation.

Finally. What took so long?

NOW Putin can save us all from George Soros.

I was getting worried he was not going to do it, with all the tanks exploding, general quagmiring and stuff.

That was where the Lubavitcher Rebbe’s father was sent in exile for counterrevolutionary activities. Roizman is in good company. Hope he survives. The Rebbe’s father died in captivity.

Roizman was first sentences in the 1980 for dating women in bars and then stealing everything of value from their homes. Then he has become a member of infamous Uralmash mob, dealing in the traffic of antiques.

In the 1980s, the Soviet Union was still intact, Afghanistan and Chernobyl were not yet a big thing, and with it the KGB was alive and operational. So, is this information derived from a KGB-coerced confession, or is there some independent verification of the allegations? And at what point and why, did he do either a turnabout or a purported turnabout to regime dissenter? The profession of gangster is much more lucrative and much less hazardous than dissenter, so the transformation is doubly mysterious.

It comes from his criminal records, the court sentences are available as well complete with testimonies of his victims.

And if there’s one thing that can be counted on, it’s the truthfulness of Soviet-era accusations.

As I said, in the 1980s, if the KGB wanted you to have a criminal record, you would have them PDQ. The witnesses would denounce you, you would confess, and it could all be a sham. Court records from the Soviet era are not probative. I don’t know the guy. But if he’s going to jail for speaking his mind, he either has integrity he did not previously have, or he has a criminal record from the 1980s because they had to smear him to shut him up.
