Russia was never allied with Germany. They had a security pact in 1939. They were mortal enemies for the entirety of WW2
Not military allies, but the Soviet Union helped the Nazis until Hitler attacked them. Soviet oil fueled the campaign against France and the Battle of Britain. They were no saints.

Don’t gloss over the initial Soviet invasion of the Baltic states, when they in collusion with Hitler divided Poland. In 1940 (a year before Barbarossa), the USSR occupied the Baltic states - I’m not talking about when they enslaved Eastern Europe in 1945.

Churchill never accepted Soviet occupation of Poland; his country (and France) had gone to war to maintain Poland’s independence, and he knew in 1945 that they’d accomplished nothing but a lost empire and countless dead.

Franco gave a great speech after the US reached out during the Cold War (starting with the Korean War); he mentions how only so late did the US see what he opposed in Spain in 1936.

It is shameful that for all the rhetoric, the US and Wstern allies never helped European countries suppress communist revolutions after the intervention in the Russian Civil War. Those communist revolutions produced Hitler, Mussolini, Franco, Salazar and the authoritarian regimes that would later ally with the Axis in Eastern Europe. The Axis in Europe was the predecessor of the EU - and Germany still leads it, while England isn’t in it.

They don't currently use any of the old Communist symbols.

This is their Coat-of-Arms with no hammer and sickle as they had under the USSR.

Here is a military uniform with no red star.

Here is current star on their Russian Aircraft notice the white, blue and red colors like their Russian flag.  The red part is most prominent which quickly identifies it as friend or foe in battle.

You may have seen individual Russian soldiers in the current action use the old red banner flag with the hammer and sickle in an attempt to intimidate Ukrainian soldiers.   We have seen American soldiers show the Confederate stars and bars flag, but it doesn't mean they are secessionists.   Just that they are proud of their Southern heritage, by the Grace of God.
