Think about how dumb societies are that it took them over 40 years to make this happen.
What is really shocking is the amount of barbarity on Russian social media. They brag about the superiority of their nuclear weapons, their missiles, and their ability to destroy Western Europe and America. They love to talk big about taking Alaska (as even leaders in the Duma do). They act as if they are invulnerable to the West’s weapons.

It is going to require more losses and economic hardship to take the wind out of those sails.
It took years to whip up this level of venom. It will probably take 2-3 years of bitter losses to chasten that hubris.
It has got to be bad enough that they lose their taste for it, for a generation.

Is that a joke? They were “in the fight from the beginning” when THEY INVADED THE BALTIC STATES AND TOOK HALF OF POLAND IN 1939, FOLLOWED BY PART OF FINLAND IN 1940. Do you know what they did in those areas before Hitler threw them out in 1941?
They didn’t “free half of Europe”; they invaded the half of Europe that chose alliance with Hitler instead of Stalin-supported communist insurrection and Soviet occupation. The Soviet role in Spain’s civil war (1936-1939) wasn’t lost on Europe, and a few years later many people made it clear they were terrified of Stalin far more than they were of Hitler. Hitler’s murderous rampage doesn’t excuse Stalin’s murderous rampage; don’t gloss over what the USSR did in the 1930s and 40s. They didn’t “liberate” Ukraine, Finland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, eastern Germany, Hungary, Czechoslovakia, Romania, and Bulgaria; they occupied them by force after failing in earlier attempts to overthrow their governments by funding/supporting communist takeovers there.
Poland wasn’t the only part of that deal; while Germany took Western Europe, Stalin was allowed to take Eastern Europe (part of Finland, along with the entire countries of Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania).

They were allied with Germany in the invasion of Poland; there is no denying that. They had agreed on where they’d split it up.
The USSR had helped the Nazis develop their weapons and train military in hiding before they came out with their new armed forces; they WERE partners.

That was the purpose of this monument. To humiliate Latvians and to show them that Moscow is in charge and can force this lie of “liberating” on them at least in public spaces.
Years ago I remember reading how Latvia was at risk because a quarter of their population is Russian; the obelisk should have been removed decades ago for that very reason.
It has been very hard to play this game of life as Latvia in recent decades. Like playing basketball with just one arm. You have to do everything else very well.
Decades ago this removal would have been met with a huge propaganda assault from Russia (still is) and the “well-meaning liberal useful idiots” in the west would have gone along with that.
I think Latvia is more worried about the current history of the last 30 years and Putin’s short history of Russian oppressor in 1991 to the current strong man leader of that oppressor nation than they are about a long gone past and the man named Hitler.
As Russia returns again to its conquering wars the nations that were only finally freed from it while David Lee Roth and Madonna were stars are concerned about the Russian invasion that is happening today.
It isn’t just the Soviet Union that has support here, at least a couple have included Red China with current Russia as being the hope of mankind.
I think you need to brush up on your history. Germany and Russia were never allies but the Soviet union in America were allies from 1941 to 1945. That was a true formal alliance with lend lease and billions of dollars given by America to Stalin. The Baltic states were no more invaded by Stalin then France was invaded by America - both countries were on their way to defeat Hitler in Berlin and the surrounding countries of the Nazi empire were liberated one by one from the east and the west. After the war Churchill Roosevelt and Stalin together agreed to carve up all of Europe into spheres of influence. These three made the decision between them to occupy Europe. Today, Russia no longer occupies eastern Europe but America still occupies a vast European empire of vassal states and by breaking agreement after agreement and pushing eastward to enrich the MIC, we created thecurrent Ukrainian carnage with 150,000 Ukranian men dead. Study more, project less.
It’s probably assuming Franco would be a part of the Nazi orbit, like Italy.
The reason that the Soviets didn’t ally with Britain and France in the first place in 1939, was because they wouldn’t allow the Soviets to have Poland.

And this is just the start. Monuments to the Russian rapists and slavemasters are going to fall all over Europe...and probably the ‘stans, too!

Proving what? May day was (and is) celebrated worldwide. It has its origins as an iron age European spring festival marking the midpoint between the solstice and equinox. Sometime in the late 19th century it got an International Worker’s Day designation added to it. It’s always, to this day, huge in Germany independent of its brief dalliance with communism. It’s like saying Russians and Germans were allies because they both celebrate Christmas.
