NBC considers cutting back programming hours in prime time
Fox Business ^ | August 26, 2022 | Joe Flint

NBC is considering reducing the number of hours it programs in prime time, people familiar with the matter said, a cost-cutting move that would reflect broadcast television’s diminishing popularity.

Under the scenario being discussed, NBC would stop programming the 10 p.m. to 11 p.m. hour and give those seven hours per week to local TV stations to program, the people said.

The talks are preliminary and it is possible that NBC will decide to continue to program the 10 p.m. hour, one of the people said. NBC hasn’t officially discussed the matter with its affiliate board, a group that represents station partners, two people close to that organization said. The earliest such a shift could take place would be the fall of 2023.

If NBC did drop the hour, it would have to decide which shows in its lineup would get cut. The network currently airs mostly scripted dramas in the 10 p.m. hour. Those could be moved to earlier in the evening to replace other content.

I give the major networks all, 5 more years, tops.

I recently watched a few episodes on "Manifest", a sci-fi show that aired on NBC.

I was taken aback at how amateur it looked, compared to the original programming you see on the major streaming channels and cable channels such as AMC and History.

It was bad. Horrible lighting, horrible effects, lousy sets. it looked like the quality of programming you'd see on TV back in the mid 1990s, and this show premiered in 2018!

My first thought was that the networks have lost it. They can't produce a TV show of the quality that HBO, Netflix, or even Amazon is doing. Even "Vikings" on the History Channel blew it out of the water in terms of production value!

What are they doing? They're so entrenched in the past, they've failed to innovate and keep up.

Sports is the only thing keeping the networks afloat, once they go, and they will, it’s all over for them.

Isn't that what MSM 'news' shows are?

The sucking sound you hear is the sound of the legacy media....sucking.

Entertainment/TV is yet another mainstay industry that’s dissolving in NYC... along with banking, commercial real estate etc. Restaurants and shopping districts are nearly ruined too.

Yep. Live sporting events are the only thing keeping 40 million American households from cutting the cord.

Eventually, a subscription-based streaming service "SportsFlix" or some such, will cut a deal with all the professional and college sports for live streaming of everything. They'll charge $29.95/month and that'll be the end of the networks.

That’s really weird given the quantity of stuff they have on stream. Wouldn’t really reduce the number of hours they’re producing.

More of their programming is going on their online site Peacock, which you have to pay for.

Would that be considered racist by some?

Frankly, the color bars seen in the past would be more
entertaining and truthful than the crap now shown on these
networks. (Sigh, colors = racist as well).

I’m waiting for College Football to basically become two conferences (Big Ten and SEC), and then each will sign a mega contract with Amazon Prime, HBO Plus, etc.
