Public School Enrollment Slow to Rebound (enrollment declines lead to funding losses)
US News ^ | August 16, 2022 | Lauren Camera

Public school enrollment didn’t deepen during the last school year, new federal data shows, despite the waves of disruptions and closures caused by new variants and quarantine policies. But it also didn’t rebound after careening over a cliff at the onset of the coronavirus pandemic when K-12 schools shed more than 1 million students.

“Compared with fall 2020, total public school enrollment in prekindergarten through grade 12 was unchanged in fall 2021, with 49.4 million students enrolled in fall 2020 and 49.5 million students in fall 2021,” says Peggy Carr, commissioner of the National Center for Education Statistics, the research arm of the Education Department, which published the new data on Tuesday.

Some 50.8 million students were enrolled in public schools during the 2019-2020 school year prior to the pandemic. Many fled for the consistency offered by private schools or the flexibility of homeschooling amid a patchwork of ever-changing risk-mitigation strategies that kept millions of students in remote learning until the end of the 2020-21 school year.

With a new academic year underway, school leaders are hoping to recoup some of those seats, especially given the projected loss in funding that follows for districts posting enrollment declines. New school safety guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which loosened quarantine, isolation and safety recommendations last week, are poised to provide a more consistent school learning experience that they hope will draw families back to public schools.

States like CA will just keep funding frozen at 2019 levels. Already happening.

My south central PA School District hiked taxes 4.4% this year—despite a 25+% boost in state “basic education” subsidy!

Los Angeles teacher union was complaining today that many teachers can’t afford to live in the areas they teach and many have to get part time jobs. Negotiations are beginning now.

Think globally, act locally. Regardless of what one thinks the problems facing this country are, education is the answer. The biggest obstacle to breaking the union stranglehold on education is start-up costs for charter and other school options. Support school choice with $$ and time!

I’m always puzzled by teachers’ expectations that they should live within 5 minutes of the schools they teach in. All professionals expect a 90 minute one way commute to work from the suburb to the city (at least until 2020, when remote options exploded, but then teachers CHOSE an in-person profession).

Why should teaching be any different? We all have long commutes. They could keep applying to other schools closer to their homes as well. No shortage of openings, especially for math and science high school teachers.

I million of 50 million is careening? Wow.
My thought Pete b… how much co2 is released by buses and parents driving there kids to school? Let’s stop learning like it’s 1949.
I know… the socialization… what are they dogs? Kids can learn to socialize in much healthier environments.

Just like back in the old pot days the government the police everyone knows where the drugs are they don’t want to do anything about it. In the current situation the government is fine with people dying at huge numbers if possible.

Sounds logical.
