Asia Times ^

Summary/Overview

Ukraine says an offensive in the Kherson region has begun – with some initial successes. Russia agrees and says offensive actions have been beaten back and substantial losses in men and materiel have been inflicted. Thick fog of war, thicker of propaganda.

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) mission to investigate the situation at the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant complex, will reach the city of Ernegodar on August 31 after a stopover in Kiev. Artillery shelling of the six-reactor area in Russian-controlled territory south of the Dnepr River continued on August 30.

Natural gas pumping over the Nord Stream 1 pipeline will be halted from August 31 through September 3 for repairs, according to Russian operator Gazprom.

Russian forces continued their slow grind toward Sloviansk and into Bakhmut at the mouth of the Donbas salient and moved slowly west from locations opposite and south of the city of Donetsk.

The enemy’s daily update, fwiw

An attempt by Zelensky regime to resume offensive in Nikolaev-Krivoy Rog and other directions has failed.

Excerpt, translated.

“... according to the data of the Illichiv Morgue, as of a few days ago, 87,000 dead people were documented in Mariupol. There is also a database of unknowns. Unknown bodies of civilians are being dug up in mass graves. As of today, there were 26,750 such people.”

So, according to the civilan deaths in and around Mariupol, if you include identified corpses as well as those yet to be identified, 113,750 bodies have been counted so far.

This number is apparently based on digital records of the examination of each and every body.

They haven’t finished excavating recent mass graves yet.

Good old Russia, they went into Mariupol to “save” its people and yet there’s 12 times as many dead people in the first six months of war - just from Mariupol and its surrounding villages - than were killed across the entire duration of the Euromaidan/Donbas conflicts over an 8 year period.

For those who are math impaired, a conservative estimate would suggest that since Russia’s Special Military Operation began, the civilian kill rate has gone up by an impresive 9600%.

If that’s when they were being “careful” not to take out civilians, one dreads to think how many would’ve died if they’d been ambivalent. The only positive is, it’s quite some way short of the minimum 1.2 million civilian casualties that their pundits on TV were projecting about inflicting on Ukraine FOLLOWING a successful takeover of the country.

The main thing in Kherson
Media of the city of Kherson and Kherson region. We are always interested!

The results of the offensive of the Armed Forces of Ukraine on the Kherson front - 1700 dead for 1.5 km of the occupied land The original plan of Kyiv, apparently, implied converging strikes from the Andreevka area and the front near Vysokopole with a connection near Berislav. Thus, the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine wanted to encircle the forces of the RF Armed Forces east of Novaya Kakhovka.

Near Vysokopole, Kyiv decided to use its reserves, which it had been preparing for so long. Apparently, tank brigades, previously based in Krivoy Rog, went into battle. They were equipped with modernized Polish T-72 tanks.

But relatively modern equipment did not help the Armed Forces of Ukraine in this direction - the Kyiv brigades ran into a strong defense of Russian personnel units, with powerful artillery support, which hit pre-shot squares. Russian tactics, by and large, have not changed much since the Kursk Bulge. Artillery cuts off infantry from tanks with barrage fire, tanks without infantry become blind and are destroyed by anti-tank weapons. Only now it’s not the German “Tigers” that are burning , but the Polish “Twardy”.

In the area of Andreevka-Lozovoye, the offensive of the Armed Forces of Ukraine was more successful, as they attacked across the Ingulets River, from an unexpected direction. On the other side of the river, the Kyiv units were met by mobilized infantry, which had dubious combat qualities (any mobilized units lose to personnel). She retreated, and the units of the Armed Forces of Ukraine were able to move forward 5 km and enter Dry Stavok without a fight.

However, further the course of events was determined by the well-built mobile defense of the Russians - the reserves of the RF Armed Forces, paratroopers on the BMD, supported by tanks and artillery, immediately moved to the place of the breakthrough. In addition, having entered the gap, units of the Armed Forces of Ukraine broke away from their air defense umbrella - they worked out the Russian Aerospace Forces.

Everything predetermined the outcome of the breakthrough - the Kiev units were quickly knocked outfrom Sukhoi Stavka and withdrew to positions in Andreevka and Lozovoe. There are forest plantations there, which simplifies the defense of villages by the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

As a result of the offensive, units of the Armed Forces of Ukraine occupied two villages - Andreevka and Lozovoe, advancing 1.5 kilometers. At the same time, they lost 1,700 people and more than 100 armored vehicles.

“Ukrainian troops lost four combat aircraft: two Su-25s, one Su-24 and one MiG-29”

It’s funny that for months the Russians have claimed that Ukraine’s airforce has been entirely destroyed, but every week they also report new stories of air combat.

“The results of the offensive of the Armed Forces of Ukraine on the Kherson front - 1700 dead for 1.5 km of the occupied land”

So the Russians have been forced to admit they have lost territory this week. That is something almost certain to be true. The surrounding blather about how much that land cost the Ukrainians is still to be confirmed.

Yes, and just a week or so ago there was a post about two NATO countries giving Ukraine old planes. Czech Republic was one and I cannot remember which other country, but together it was over 30 planes.

Much better depicted by an interactive map: info supplied by UKIE MOD, local citizen reports, and non- western media.

https://liveuamap.com/en/2022/31-august-at-pivdenny-buh-direction-russian-army-shelled

“ At Pivdenny Buh direction Russian army shelled Oleksandrivka, Lyubomyrivka, Novomykolaivka, Lupareve. Chervony Yar, Novohryhorivka, Stepove, Pervomaiske, Kyselivka, Partyzanske, Kvitneve, Chervona Dolyna, Kobzartsi, Ternivka, Andriivka, Osokorivka, Olhyne, Ivanivka, Trudolyubivka, Dobrianka, Potiomkyne, Kniazivka and Topolyne. Russian aviation conducted airstrikes at Andriivka and Plotnytske tract, - General Staff of Armed Forces of Ukraine says in the morning report Facebook”, click on the maps bomb symbols to get UKIE reports.

Fascinating, Vlads meat grinding artillery never ceases. If this turned back Ukie offensive is the long awaited “ one million man offensive “, it bodes not well for the Ukies. War cheerleaders, carry on.
