Britain is in no condition to be independent. Its natural resources of iron ore, coal, oil, etc. have been used up. It has been over a century since it could feed its population.
No, they are still there but it became much cheaper to import. No country is in a position to become completely autarchic anyway. We all depend on exotic materials that only come from certain parts of the world like rare earths.
