Ukraine's mysterious battle to retake Kherson
The Week ^ | 9/6/22 | Peter Weber

Posted on 09/06/2022 10:59:50 AM PDT by JonPreston

By the end of the first week, it still wasn't clear how the battle was going — or even if this is the big counterpunch Ukraine has been telegraphing. Here's a look at what we know and what it could mean for the shape of the war:

"We are very sensitive to not getting ahead of the Ukrainians," but "what I will say is that we are aware of Ukrainian military operations that have made some forward movement, and in some cases, in the Kherson region, we are aware, in some cases, of Russian units falling back," Pentagon spokesman Brig. Gen. Pat Ryder said at a press briefing Wednesday. "But again, in order to preserve operation security and to give the Ukrainians the time and the space that they need to conduct their operations."

I’ve heard they’re sending people in at night, taking some pictures, and then running back.

Is it true there was almost a Russo-Ukraine peace deal in April that either the US or Europe sabotaged?

There’s a difference between withdrawing and retreating - Russia withdraws , Ukraine moves out thinking they have the upper hand and Russia comes in like a lion and plows them over.

But in order to keep the Ukraine troops on the battlefield they use the word “retreat”....

I heard and read that there was a peace deal in place in April, only to be rejected by Biden

Im old enough to remember democrats saying we did not have 13 billion for a border wall with Mexico.

Now 50 billion for Ukraine is no biggie.

Good times.

Let’s say they take Kherson. What do they win militarily that gives them an advantage?

It’s only been a few years back that “The Hill” would have been laughed off of FreeRepublic as a leftists propaganda media outlet... Interesting

I hate to see Zelensky using his people as cannon fodder to keep the cash flowing. And sooner or later his continuous shelling (I know, our resident warmongers want to claim the Russians are shelling their own positions) of that Russian occupied nuclear power plant is going to have catastrophic results.

Madness.

Ukraine originally considered a broader counteroffensive but narrowed the scope to the Kherson region in recent weeks after "war-gaming" with the U.S. military, U.S. and Western officials and Ukrainian sources told CNN. After workshopping what force levels would be needed to be successful in various scenarios, Ukraine agreed that a large offensive would risk overextending its limited resources.

An admission this war is being run from Washington DC. Guess what neocons? You OWN Ukraine now.

So what does the future hold? A stalemate that becomes increasingly expensive for everyone, including the USA, USA putting boots on the ground, or once US political will changes, the Zelensky regime collapses like Ashraf Ghani in Afghanistan. Any suggestion that Russia simply stops, is the fantasy option.

Kherson is a Ukrainian city. Retaking it for Ukraine is the objective and the advantage is in denying it to the invaders.

And then he connects Putin’s invasion of Ukraine with the Iraq war... the longer he spoke, the less credible he became...

Yes, and this article is an effort by Washington to distance itself from this losing debacle .

If the Ukrainians aren’t making advances, why has Russia postponed their “plebecite” in Kherson?

1sr..the Ukrainians should have started this offensive WAY before now. They no longer have the available troops to continue.

2rd. The Ukrainians need to drive the Russian army back over the river...and as above, I dont believe they have the ability to do it.

3nd, The Russians got themselves into a bit of a pickle for a while here. They have the river at their backs.

4th. If the Russians were really serious about that side of the Dnieper, they should start even larger offensives in the rest of the Donbass and take the pressure off that theater of ops around Kherson because the Ukrainians havent the troops to fight a multi front.

The problem I see here is that they are trying to get control of Odessa and the region. Why would anyone want to try and directly control that place when you can control it by simply controlling the east side of the river. Of course they’d like the whole of The Ukraine.

It boils down to these.

Time
Force
Information
Terrain.

Taking the Kherson region denies the Orcs access to Odessa, gives Ukraine access to the Black Sea and keeps their grain flowing. Its one small step to retaking the Crimea; threatens Orc military bases in Crimea and the Kersh Bridge, gives them access to the head gate of the Crimea’s fresh water supply.
