PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — People with disabilities in Portland, Oregon, have sued the city, saying they can’t navigate its sidewalks because of sprawling homeless encampments.
The federal class action lawsuit says the city has violated the Americans with Disabilities Act by allowing homeless people’s tents to block city sidewalks, making it difficult for people using wheelchairs, walkers or canes to use them.
“The entire class of persons with disabilities are regularly deprived of the benefits of services of the city of Portland,” said John DiLorenzo, lead counsel for the plaintiffs.
The suit was filed Tuesday in U.S. District Court in Portland.
The plaintiffs include nine people with disabilities and a caretaker. Among the plaintiffs is Keith Martin, a 71-year-old Portland resident who has used a wheelchair since having a stroke three years ago.
“I couldn’t get to my breakfast in the morning because there was a tent covering the whole sidewalk,” Martin said. “I was forced onto the street and narrowly missed a streetcar that came around the corner.”

Third World.
Competing special interest groups. popcorn futures are popping.
I think this is pretty legitimate, but in the world of craziness that is Portland the homeless > disabled.
The Schadenfreude is great whenever liberal interests collide….
I agree, actually very legitimate.

I wish I would have thought of that.

They will maintain that homelessness is the ultimate disability.
This should be epic. Most of those sidewalk squatters have been milking the disability angle for years.
Saul Alinsky’s Rules for Radicals:
RULE 4: “Make the enemy live up to its own book of rules.”
“Competing special interest groups. popcorn futures are popping.”
As is schadenfreude.
Well, maybe this pushy tribe of obnoxious winers* will again do some good. The crosswalk curb cutdowns were great, thank you, and the overabundance of handicapped parking spaces, but other than that it’s been a long dry spell.
*That’s a quote from my best friend, the now deceased dean of admissions of a Florida college. Sam (may he continue to R.I.P.) was one of the last reported cases of polio in Michigan before the Salk vaccine took effect. Paraplegic, lotsa muscle weakness, ventilator in his last decade of life, etc. He refused to ever sit in a wheelchair; had a wheeled scooter instead. “Just because I’m fu**ed up doesn’t mean I can be an ass about it.” (-: Gone nearly 30 years now. Boy, do I miss him.
The National Association of the Deaf should sue regarding mandatory ineffective masking because masks prevent lip reading and that impacts the ability of the deaf to function in society.
Not a super ADA fan, don’t like some of the lawsuits that were brought against small businesses due to some flaw in the structure of their entrance, etc. That is debateable and was debated via litigation as is our American way of doing things.
But, I must say, that the sidewalks are the public thoroughfare, which these disabled persons have paid for by their tax dollars. They are provided for the use of all, abled, disabled, tax payors, children, illegal aliens, etc. to AMBULATE upon. If that way is blocked by persons who are essentially lodging there, well yeah. That’s a violation of the ADA in terms of the disabled, and of the social contract with the rest of the users/payors.
Sue the Bastards, and may you prevail!!!
May reveal some of the rampant hypocrisy of the Left. That is a good thing.
And would help drive a wedge in the groups, something I have promoted here for years. You KNOW the Left does that to us (that meany Trump vs. the moderate Romney and Liz and Murkowski).
I truly feel bad for the disabled dealing with this crap. I still wonder though how they voted? If they voted for pinkos, well, embrace the suck with everyone else, homey.
