Early Wednesday morning, the last of the Republican congressional primaries was all but decided, with Bob Burns leading George Hansel to be the Republican nominee facing Rep. Annie Kuster in the 2nd Congressional District.
Burns would join Karoline Leavitt, who beat out Matt Mowers to take on Rep. Chris Pappas in the 1st District, and Don Bolduc, who defeated Chuck Morse to take on Sen. Maggie Hassan.
All three likely Republican nominees are ardent supporters of Donald Trump, and all three styled themselves as anti-establishment outsiders. The Bulletin talked to Dante Scala, a politics professor at the University of New Hampshire, late Tuesday night about what the results mean for New Hampshire Republicans and how they might shape the upcoming general election in November.
This conversation has been edited for length and clarity.
What is the overall theme of the night and what does it say about where the Republican electorate is trending?
It could well be – by the time the 2nd District finishes reporting – a “triple MAGA” night. Bolduc, Leavitt, Burns. On the Trump spectrum, all very Trumpy. You look at the margin, Bolduc’s getting close to 40 percent (of the vote). Leavitt is getting 33 percent and then Burns I think is around 32 percent. So it’s not a majority, but it’s clearly you know, it’s a very significant faction, no question about it.
… It shows how Trumpism has grown beyond Donald Trump himself. Don Bolduc has some elements of Trump but probably has some elements that are unique to him. Karoline Leavitt is pure distilled Trump rhetoric. And so it just shows where the base of the party is. And it shows how, really, Trumpism is here to stay in the Republican Party.

I want to put down a marker on MAGA as an exclusively Republican phenomenon, and why that’s so bad:
KAROLINE LEAVITT Republican
23,813 34.80%
MATT MOWERS Republican
17,389 25.41%
GAIL HUFF BROWN Republican
12,090 17.67%
These are the results as of 7:00 AM. I voted for Leavitt, and I’m glad she won. Mowers already lost to the easily beatable Chris Pappas (D) once, no reason to believe he would do better this time, plus all his commercials were terrible. Gail Huff Brown is a Susan Collins clone.
Here’s the thing: Most Mowers voters, and ALL Brown voters, are going to vote for the Democrat in November.
This happens over and over again. Christine O’Donnell (not a witch) was the index case.
Capturing a plurality of registered Republican voters is not enough, if the collective majority is going to defect in November.
Trump in 2016 showed the way by picking up lots of Democrats and unenrolled voters. Making MAGA a dissident brand open only to Republicans is a fatal mistake.
I voted for Morse. Hassan is beatable (and beating her is important). Bolduc is a recycled neocon in MAGA clothing, Hassan will chew him up and spit him out.
Morse is an electoral politician. He is very experienced at winning elections, which, as it happens, is what this audition last night was for.
He says “Trumpism”. I prefer “MAGA”. It’s way beyond Trump now.
“she worked for DJT in some capacity.”
In the Press office, I think.
She has a great personality and a ton of energy - she'll do us proud.
Bannon also had her on War Room often.
Couldn’t have said better myself. Exactly the GOPe mindset.
Think about what you just said.
It is exactly what the GOPe says every time we demand Conservatives.
They pulled that routine on Roe vs Wade for two generations. Oh don’t talk about that.
Trump comes along and tells the GOPe to FO, and look what was accomplished.
Nothing ventured, nothing gained.
You don’t think Trump will get any Democrat or Independant votes? Really?
Every time I post about this, I say, "Trump showed the way in 2016".
Democrat VOTERS support closing the border, ending offshoring of extraction and manufacture, and an end to perversion in the schools. Maybe not a majority of them, but enough as coalition partners to win election after election.
Thanks for outing yourself as a typical leftwing RINO Establishment supporter...Mitch McConnel must be proud of you.
Your prior posts make more sense now.
Clearly, you lack the intellect to grasp reality and support Constitutional patriots vs the treasonous totalitarians.
RINO = Leftwing Socialist embedded in GOP
The winning template is here for Republican politicians to follow. Some still remain cowardly tho
Sorry, no RINOs allowed.
You folks are missing something. She’s a hottie. Those things count.
“Morse is an electoral politician. He is very experienced at winning elections, which, as it happens, is what this audition last night was for.”
*************
This, “experienced at winning elections” politician, just conceded the audition.
Thanks Karl.

The problem with your reasoning is that these “winnable” candidates the RNC and NRSC get behind don’t often win. The last three Republican nominees for US Senate in New Hampshire lost, and all three were Chuck Morse types, Ayotte, Brown, and Sununu.
And even when they DO win, we end up with stories like the below, where they vote for Democrat agenda items, like good little Republicans.
The way to avoid having Senators like this is to stop nominating Senators like this, and to go for broke, as Connecticut, Vermont, and now New Hampshire have.
It’s a Republican wave year. And the days of weak-in-the-knees pantywaist-type Republicans are over.
Will you be voting for Bolduc in November, or will you be like Charlie Baker last week, who said he won’t endorse or help out Geoff Diehl (and by bet is Chris Sununu will be the same)?
New Hampshire Hat Trick.
