Russia on Tuesday gave support to plans by separatists which it backs in Ukraine to hold referendums paving the way for the annexation of swathes of additional territory, a direct challenge to the West that could sharply escalate the conflict.
After nearly seven months of war, including a critical battlefield defeat in northeastern Ukraine, Putin is pondering his next steps.
In what appeared to be choreographed requests, Russian-backed officials across 15% of Ukrainian territory - an area about the size of Hungary or Portugal - lined up to request referendums on joining Russia.
The self-styled Donetsk (DPR) and the Luhansk People's Republics (LPR), which Putin recognised as independent just before the invasion, and the Kherson and Zaporizhzhia regions have asked for votes over less than 24 hours.
Luhansk, Donetsk and Kherson officials said the referendums would take place in just days - on Friday Sept. 23 through to Monday Sept. 27. Russia does not fully control any of the four regions, with only around 60% of Donetsk region in Russian hands.

Referendum votes to be held by mail and internet.
Voting to be completed by next Monday.
Putin to make nationwide TV address to Russia tonight.
Nobody cares.
Go to Truth Social, or Gettr. Right wing alternatives to twit. Know how many conversations are about Ukraine?
None.
Zero.
Zip.
There. Fixed it.
Wait, so the Russkies hold 15% of Ukraine? Who knew? I thought they were “defeated everywhere.”
Their vote will probably be FAR CLEANER than anything in the US these days. No midnight ballot drops there!
After referendums, Putin to declare martial law and mobilizations in the following regions in Russia:
Bryansk, Kursk, Belgorod, Vornesh, Rostov, Kalingrad, Crimea.
Moscow and St Petersburg will be protected from mobilization for now due to political pressure on Putin.
I thought Moscow was about to fall.
Was I mislead!?
The Russian referendums will be vote by mail and vote by internet.
I stand corrected. There are some posts about the Ukraine war.
They all say (paraphrasing) “Why are we sending billions there when our country is broke and falling apart?”
Sorry Putin, but you actually have to win the war before you can annex anything.
Once again, we are the leader and they are copying us - they'll have election month, followed by vot-counting week. Mail in ballots for everyone, collected by reliable political operatives!
They can have state-run media announce the favorable results 10 days later!
Last week the Russophiles were saying 20%, and now it’s 15%, so they must have lost 25% of their territory in one week it would appear.
Not to mention they effectively held most of Donetsk and Luhansk before the invasion started, so I’m guessing it’s about 5% they have gained in the last 7 months that they are still holding on to.
Sure, Comrade Bob, Russia runs free and open elections all the time. That’s why Putin always wins.
Putin needs to announce the referendum results before Lend Lease fiscal funding begins on October 1.
“Sure, Comrade Bob, Russia runs free and open elections all the time. That’s why Putin always wins.”
The UN is welcome to observe, or even run their own elections there - the results will be the same, though.
Referendums start Friday - although we already know the International Community will never accept it anymore than they did Crimea.
Garanteed Zelensky will continue active combat there regardless. Keep a hot conflict going means Ukraine will never qualify for NATO.
