Actually a bullet will go thru a gas tank with no consequences other than a leak.

except in hollywood where it can create a major explosion, or kill an actor..
Ive been to a fair amount of car fires, never saw one explode. Couple of pops from the tires, a few times, and an occasional pop from the gas tank, never an explosion.
