Russia's sham referendums in Ukraine: What does it hope to achieve?
DW ^ | 9/21/2022 | Roman Goncharenko

Russia had already declared its intent in spring, and is now going ahead with plans to annex the territories it has occupied in the south and east of Ukraine on a fast-track basis. Simultaneous votes in the Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson and Zaporizhzhia regions have been scheduled from September 23 to September 27. In a speech on Wednesday, Russian President Vladimir Putin suggested that Moscow would recognize the results.

Just as it did with the Crimean annexation in 2014, Russia is making a point of appearing not to be involved. It was local Ukrainian politicians supported by the Russian military who announced the so-called "referendums." As in the case of Crimea eight years ago, the vote has been brought forward from a previously suggested date — that of November 4. Regional referendums are banned in Ukraine. Like in Crimea, there will be no independent election monitoring.

Yes' or 'no'

However, that is as far as the similarities go — there are far more differences.

Russian media are reporting that there will be regional differences. In Donetsk and Luhansk, the ballot will pose a single question, to be answered with a "yes" or a "no," on whether to join the Russian Federation.

In Kherson and Zaporizhzhia, three questions will be asked but only one "yes" or "no" answer will be possible: "Are you for secession from Ukraine, establishing an independent country and joining the Russian Federation?"

Voting will also take place in Russia, where hundreds of thousands of Ukrainians have fled since 2014. The majority of Ukrainian refugees, however — several million — have fled to regions controlled by Kyiv and abroad.

Because we all know that vote will be free and fair, with not even a smidgeon of corruption or coercion from the Russian invaders.

It has been, and still is, none of America’s business.

Apart from kickbacks of billions of dollars to corrupt American politicians, Ukraine is of no strategic importance to the USA.

U.S. taxpayers gain NOTHING from pouring vast amounts of their money into keeping the slaughter going until the last Ukrainian is killed.

Disprove anything- ANYTHING- George says concerning Ukraine as he just obliterates all the pro-Ukrainian propaganda BS!

Do it, if you can.
But you won’t, cause you can’t.

Exactly. The world would be far better off with Russia reduced to its old Grand Duchy of Moscow status.

You are correct. But neocons disagree with you. Neocons love foreign wars even if it means it is on borrowed money.

How many BILLIONS we have squandered in Iraq, Afghanistan, Libya, Kuwait, etc? And what exactly was the benefit to US tax payers? Oil is fungible commodity. Those countries have no other use for oil except sell it. They can not drink it.
So to quote Hilda beast, “what difference does it make” who owns the oil? Even Venzuela is selling us oil.

A great piece here on why Russia will continue to lose this conflict. Unlike the heyday of the Soviet Union, Russia’s industrial base is far too feeble to sustain Putin’s little adventure in Ukraine.

Ukraine is of no strategic importance to the USA.

The US deep state and neocons see Russia and China as the only strategic competitors to total global dominance. Of the two, Russia is actually more "dangerous" because its both a European and Asian power. Its a military and resources power. I would add its also on Europe's doorstep, and is also now promotes its Christianity (whether fake or real), which is a competing western world-view to financialized, woke-globalism. Everyone talks about the 2019 RAND report about hobbling Russia, but it goes back decades to Brzezinski and Kissinger.

So for those people, containing and dismantling Russia is of absolute importance. Its why they have been active and interested in controlling Ukraine and pulling it into NATO, since Putin arrived on the scene.

Why vote when you can have a Revolution like Kiev in 2014!

Ukraine is of no strategic importance to the USA.

Russia's invasion made it strategically important. Putin planned on this being a fairly painless episode leading to the annexation of most of Ukraine with maybe a rump puppet government in Kiev. In the absence of any significant opposition from the US and Europe, he would then have moved on to other tasty morsels like the Baltic states within a few years.

Preventing that from happening and making Russia's defeat clear are now very much in the strategic interests of the US.

The whole thing is a money laundering scheme to enrich administration and congressional members through third party kick backs.

“sham, sham, sham”...make sure to keep parroting the MSM’s narratives like a good little NPC.

Meanwhile our North American voting events are the most secure and legitimate processes in the history of the universe right?
