Four Russian-occupied areas of Ukraine are expected on Friday to begin voting in referendums on joining Russia, in a move that raises the stakes of Moscow’s invasion seven months after fighting began.
The referendums, which are illegal under international law, could pave the way for Russian annexation of the areas, allowing Moscow to frame the ongoing Ukrainian counteroffensive as an attack on Russia itself.
Such a move could provide Moscow with a pretext to escalate its faltering war, which has seen Kyiv regain thousands of square miles of territory this month.
In an address Wednesday, Russian President Vladimir Putin raised the specter of nuclear weapons in his address, saying he would use “all the means at our disposal,” if he deemed the “territorial integrity” of Russia to be jeopardized.
The votes, which are expected to take place over five days, were called by pro-Russian officials in the self-declared republics of Donetsk and Luhansk, and in Russian-held parts of Kherson and Zaporizhzhia in the south, with questions on the ballot varying slightly depending on the region. Together the four regions make up around 18% of Ukraine’s territory.
The plans, which are being held under military occupation and effectively carried out at gunpoint, have been strongly condemned by both the government of Ukraine and its allies in the West as “a sham.” The European Union has said it won’t recognize the results and has indicated it is preparing a new package of sanctions against Russia.
Putin backed the referendums in an address to the nation on Wednesday.

Ukraine banned your culture, forfeited your social security, stole your bank accounts, disconnected water and electricity, and runs TV shows there you are called collaborator for failure to “resist”. Then bombing and shelling on top of it.
Russia returned you your culture, pays you pension and benefits, restored utilities and so on.
Tell me what sort of weirdo is not going to vote for Russia?

About as ‘sham’ of a referendum as was done by the US and NATO in breaking Serbia in half and creating some sh*t called Kosovo. Yep, about as ‘sham’ as that. Got it.
I remember elections in many troubled countries, but I don’t remember the American media ever referring to them as a “sham”. Even in Zimbabwe, Iraq and Libia, they never disparaged the democratic process.
I can only conclude it’s because their favored side is going to lose.
Funny how the NATO supervised “referendum” in Kosovo was hailed as a seminal. moment for democracy and self determination, but when It happens outside of the globalist’s grasp, it’s suddenly a “sham.” The people running the ballot trafficked coup are the last people on earth to opine on political legitimacy. Screw NATO, WEF, the EU and the fake news. This is legitimate, legal and binding action by the people according to their own rules.
Pew and other recognizes pollsters do not poll Crimeans and East Ukrainians much. You know why.

They did one before the Russian “occupation” in which they said they wanted independence from Ukraine. Russia didn’t enter until that happened.
