I figured it would go that way since the large majority are Russian that lives there and speak Russian. Further west....not so much.

Yep....8 yrs of their people being attacked by Ukraine.....and all attempts at negotiating fell thru - now Russia will secure those areas and stop the fighting once they’re annexed.
Ukraine should have stayed with the Minsk agreements - as they agred to. Those areas would have remained Ukraine.
