Ukrainians flee from Russian annexation - while they still can

ZAPORIZHZHIA, Ukraine (Reuters) -"It's funny. Nobody voted, yet the results are in," laughed Lyubomir Boyko, 43, from Golo Pristan, a village in Russian-occupied Kherson province as he waited on Wednesday outside a United Nations aid office with his family at a refugee reception centre.

As Russia prepares to annex a swathe of Ukrainian territory the size of Portugal after staging what it calls referendums in four provinces, hundreds of Ukrainians escaped through the last Russian checkpoint. Many said they had fled while they still can.

"A lot of people are just leaving everything behind. There are places that are completely deserted," said Boyko. "Everybody wants to be in Ukraine, and this is why everybody is leaving. Over there is a lawless place. Entire villages are leaving."

He, his wife and their two children had arrived at the aid centre in the parking lot of a home improvement store in Ukrainian-held Zaporizhzhia city, after waiting for two days before Russian forces abruptly let them out.

Those fleeing Russian-held territory say the so-called referendum has been carried out by men with guns forcing people to cast ballots in the street.

"They can announce anything they want. Nobody voted in the referendum except a few people who switched sides. They went from house to house, but nobody came out," Boyko said.

For now, Russian forces have been letting some people out of occupied parts of Kherson and Zaporizhzhia provinces through the one checkpoint. No one knows how long the route will stay open.

The biggest fear is that fighting-aged men will be press-ganged into Russian forces once Moscow declares the territory to be Russia. Boyko said he did not know if draft-aged men were still able to leave.

Crimea held their referendum in 2014 and requested Russia absorb them. That was 8 years ago. If that vote were bogus, we would have heard of widespread resistance sabotage since then.

I have heard nothing.

The best answer for why is the vote was correct and the vast majority prefer Russia.

Looking at the maps of Russian language prominence, Kherson is less overwhelming than the other oblasts. If there are going to be folks who do not prefer Russia, it would be there, and I think the referendum vote there did show lower numbers than the other 3 regions. Something like 75% vs 90+%.

[Forwarded from DPR MFA]
🌎International observers: the referendum in the DPR passes without violations

đź“ŤToday, on September 26, international observers visited the voting stations for the referendum on the joining of the Donetsk People’s Republic to Russia.

✔️In particular, the delegation included public activist, managing director of the portal Weltnetz TV Artur Leier (Germany), President of the Association «Observatorio Hispano-Ruso de Eurasia» Fernando Moragon (Spain), independent journalist, war correspondent William Parra (Colombia), public activist and coordinator of the Immortal Regiment of Montenegro movement Igor Damjanovic (Montenegro), political analyst and founder of the Stratpol Center for Political and Strategic Analysis Xavier Moreau (France).

đź“ťAs part of their visit, foreign representatives observed the holding of the referendum at the exit polling stations in Torez, Enakievo and Debaltsevo. Foreign experts noted that no violations of the voting procedure were found, all voting stages are transparent and democratic.

âś…Also, foreign observers talked with local residents, noting the importance of their ability to choose their future on their own.

It should be noted that earlier, representatives of Italy, Germany, South Africa, Togo, Venezuela and Romania acted as international observers of the voting process of the DPR residents in the referendum.

No violations of the regulations were observed. Mexican observer Israel Gomez Arconada on the referendum. He noted the transparency of the procedure, the absence of pressure or coercion to vote. ⚔️⚔️⚔️

One important thing to note… the West isn’t just threatening Russia over the referendums held in the DPR, LPR, Kherson and Zaporozhye.

They’re also going after international election observers who are on the ground, giving their honest reports on how the referendums are held…

The EU is now threatening to sanction anyone they deem as “obviously linked” to the referendums.

“There would be consequences for all people, who participate in the illegal, illegitimate referendums,” a spokesperson for the EU Foreign Policy Chief said. (https://bit.ly/3Rj2RBJ)

The attacks on observers have already begun, as CNN noted that Stefan Schaller, a manager at Energie Waldeck-Frankenberg, was just fired from his job and accused of clearly violating “the world view, the moral values and the philosophy of the company.” (https://cnn.it/3xZCbzb)

That’s after the German observer said residents were NOT being forced to vote at gunpoint…

Foreign observers at referendums to be put on wanted list - Kiev

Kiev said that foreign observers who monitored the referendums in the liberated regions will be put on an “international wanted list” by the police.

KIEV’S VIOLATIONS: are the only infringement on Russia’s referendum (https://t.me/IntelRepublic/5700?single), as Kiev bombs school used for voting in Kherson region, South Ukraine, trying their best to DISRUPT votes they call a “SHAM”, DESPITE International observers (https://t.me/IntelRepublic/5532), CONFIRMING its legitimacy.

Is this one of those pass-through deals, where we all support yahoo and then go to the actual article?

Similar to the ‘ethic cleansing’ in the Balkans throughout the 1990s.

Turms out to my surprise that some civilians in the north of Zaporizhzhia have tried to go into occupied areas.

I say “tried” - paranoid Russia shelled them. Yep - they actually shelled people going to join or provide support to the occupied region.

Hearts and minds. The only people welcome in occupied areas are Russian soldiers and paid collaborators. Everyone else is either a prisoner or a target.

Not clear if people went to “join”. They might have risked the journey to get their elderly relatives out or at least provide them with food.

Same difference. They were treated as combatants and shot at.

The only upside is, any people in Zaporizhzhia city who might have gone over to the new regime now won’t, if they know how they’ll be treated by the occupiers and if they have even a modicum of common sense.

The “humanitarian convoy” story is full of holes. They were supposedly going into Russian occupied territory in Zaporizhzhia to rescue some of their relatives as well as “distribute aid.” They had no flags flying that marked them as humanitarian vehicles and they were parked outside of a cafe and not on the road in a convoy. Ukraine is a war zone currently and of course there’s shooting and bombing going on, so sh!t happens.

That’s what Kremlin wishes. To almost everyone’s surprise Ukrainians are beating their army. They really believed they were going to win the war in 3 days.

Yet, if we falter now and let them have Ukraine by cutting off our arms and ammo supplies then they’re just going to add Ukrainian resources to their war machine and will invade something else next.
