At least 17 people have died in Florida due to Hurricane Ian, which pummeled the state on Wednesday and Thursday, a CNN tally of reports from local officials indicates.
However, that number is expected to increase.
The US Coast Guard conducted 68 rescue operations in Florida on Thursday, according to Rear Admiral Brendan McPherson, Commander of the US Coast Guard’s 7th District.
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis said approximately 700 people have been rescued thus far from the destruction left behind by the storm.
US President Joe Biden told reporters the storm could be the “deadliest hurricane in Florida history”. That pronouncement is likely to prove incorrect, noted The Tampa Bay Times, given Florida’s deadliest hurricane killed at least 2,500 in 1928.
Meanwhile, Hurricane Ian is moving towards the coast of South Carolina and could hit the state around high tide on Friday.

The media make me sick.
How dare DeSantis do his job and ruin the liberal narrative!
Where did the “100s dead” come from earlier?
Yeah, that’s my question too.
indeed, Australians woke up today to news bulletins saying Biden claims Hurricane Ian could be worst hurricane death toll in Florida ever, and mentioned the 1928 figure of 2,500.
the public will have lost interest by the time the actual death toll is released, probably, and will forever believe thousands died.
It was started by a county sheriff who said at a presser that Sanibel Island had been destroyed, killing hundreds.
Interesting that the only hard news reporting on Hurricane Ian impacts has come from a news agency in ISRAEL.
A sheriff of one of the badly affected counties said it.
The Sheriff of Lee County said it on GMA (Good Morning America).
This report says 12 confirmed dead, most in Charlotte County. Lee County was not figured in, and it was hardest hit.
Two dead confirmed on Sanibel (which is in Lee County). According to the Sanibel mayor’s press conference, 12 injured people plus 40 uninjured were rescued from Sanibel on Thursday. 200 households remained on Sanibel during the hurricane and rescue workers have not yet been able to check on all of those houses.
Some still refused to leave, even though there is no power or water on the island. The mayor doubts there is any grid left to restore, and all will have to rebuilt from scratch. The causeway will likewise have to be completely rebuilt.
Helicopter and drone footage shows devastation across Sanibel. An entire house was floating along way out in Tarpon Bay. An eerie sight, as the house appeared undamaged, just lifted off its foundation and sent out to sea. The windows were well above the waterline. I could not help hoping no one was inside it.
No word at all on Captiva or North Captiva.
Yes, and after the Lee County Sheriff’s stupid emotional outburst the Florida authorities seem to be being very careful in the damage and casualty assessment. There have been no more local politicos mouthing off other than the mayor trying to set up a narrative to get the state to rebuild infrastructure bigger and better as a result of the storm. Politicians are always looking for opportunities to push narratives that can get them more power or money. The world could be ending and they would be pushing a pander narrative.
Mayor of Sanibel.
Did they count the 24 Illegals boat that were in the water during Ian and capsized trying to get into Florida.
Collectivists love dead bodies.
Do you remember Hurricane Katrina
Reported thousands of dead people hid from the public?
It was so stupid.
Who wants to bet 16 of them were old white dudes to cranky to leave who had heart attacks and that medical condition would have happened anyway even without a storm over there heads?
The issue with these kinds of numbers is the government and media counts all deaths during a storm as storm related. We saw the exact same with covid as all flu deaths, for example, magically were counted as covid which made flu deaths drop to practically zero.
The media lies, folks.
It’s really bad. There’s a lot of places they haven’t been able to get to yet. I hope it doesn’t go up to 100’s but it doesn’t look good. It didn’t appear they took the evacuation warning seriously. There were people filmed swimming in the storm waters next to the pier. Fort Myers took the full force of a Cat 4 right in the chops.
Everybody wants to throw a hurricane party. That’s where statistics come from.
IF, pray to God it is, the result is a low number in fatalities, Ron DeSantis should become the Gold Standard in planning for a disaster.
THE MEDIA CANNOT HAVE THAT.
SO, the LIES will begin. Be on the lookout.
They’ll have an emergency shelter mass shooting just to bring the numbers up.
