But Comrade Cranked, that town had been formally annexed by Russia, no? Why would Comrade Putin abandon an “annexed” town if it meant so much to him?

Cranked is lying anyway and is contradicted even by Russian propagandists speaking of the urgency and importance of the "heroic defenders," battalion commanders, loss of defensive capability of the entire sector, and lots of dead bodies.

I follow a bunch of Russian milbloggers and the minimum force in Lyman seems to be pegged at 2K-3K, and that's just Lyman. There was a significant attempt to reinforce the entire area east of the Oskil River from Svatov to Yampil, but AFU just keeps rolling. Of course trolls will try to play it off as no big deal, but Russian sources are doing no such thing. Some are even starting to question the capabilities of their Army:

The "legendary" 1st Panzer Army both began its flight from the Kharkov region and continued it, bringing down the front to the north-west of the Liman. And the power and strength of the "fire brigades" from other troops was not enough.

If we add to this the problems of interaction between formations and branches of the Armed Forces, then the picture is depressing.

It's time to admit that we entered the special military operation with a completely uncombat-ready (with the exception of individual formations) district. And start doing something to fix the situation.

Let's give a hint: throwing untrained mobilized people to plug holes at the front would be a radically wrong step. Other measures and other solutions are needed.
