U.S. job openings dropped sharply in August, according to Labor Department data released Tuesday, falling at the fastest one-month pace since March 2020.
Businesses still hired employees at a steady pace and kept layoffs near historic lows in August, according to the Job Openings and Labor Turnover report. But firms also cut back their postings for open jobs, a possible sign of businesses bracing for an economic slowdown.
The number of open jobs listed in the U.S. fell from 11.2 million in July to 10.1 million in August, a decline of 1.1 million job openings, according to the Labor Department. Job openings are now well below a record of 11.4 million set in December 2021.

Unexpected!
I bet there are job openings at the hill- for communists.
Virtually Every business in my neck of the wood is hiring. My 68 year old husband works part time for FedEx. They are constantly looking for help. He could work 60 hours a week if he wanted to.
So businesses are expecting a slow down.
They could be looking for 10 people and now they are only looking for 9
” good help is hard to find these days ..”
The title is misleading, Krogers and Walmart are replacing cashiers and baggers with self-checkouts, you do it all. But no reduction in prices. The stockers they hired at Krogers have been laid off, former cashiers are stocking shelves, but not as much food, junk chips, candy, holiday, soda, or booze. Quality of produce is 2nd rate, meats to fatty, stringy. This is not just one store. Prices continue to climb fast. Gas is up 60-70 cents and heading to $1.00 more.
After Halloween stores will hire temp help for Christmas. And those who are willing to go into debt will buy. Goodwill is doing a booming double-price business. NO real bargains, all from China crap.
My eldest has trained as a Manager for 4 different stores in the last few months, each turned out to be duds. At 52 and 25 years in management up to the district level, he is not up to heavy work, bad back, and Diabetic Neuropathy.
NYS just raised the minimum wage Upstate by a buck an hour.
No vote needed, BTW.
A whole lot more people are about to find out the hard way that the real minimum wage is ZERO.
More on the above...
A lot of manufacturing companies advertise jobs for which they don’t really have openings so they can gather a number of applicants in case somebody quits suddenly. When things get really slow, even those job-listings disappear. I suspect a lot of other types of companies do this as well.
True, with the current cost of living $65K is needed for necessities. Not junk.
