Either the NYP or the DM article mentions that she was from South Africa and the couple met down there. Also this:

Based in Cape Town, the Saunderses ran Silverhill Seeds, an online ordering company that sold rare seeds to customers around the world. They typically spent half the year trekking through mountains and forests for inventory.

I get it. They were naive. But a horrible end for an innocent couple.

UMASS at Amherst for one arranges professor chaperoned trips to South Africa all the time. One of my grandson's took the trip in the summer after completing his junior year majoring in accounting. The trip was 10 days and he was always in major cities.

Why do they go to South Africa? I have no idea but I suspect it is gratis for the profs.

Naive Westerners who think all races and cultures are the same. I know several expat South Africans who all say the same thing about their feral former countrymen, none of it pretty.
