Nationwide trend of declining public school enrollment seen in some mountain districts

Public school enrollment has dropped nationally and locally in recent years, with the trend starting prior to the pandemic in many places, but certainly exacerbated by COVID-19...."COVID impacted everything, and that's probably where we saw our most significant drop, is about a 6% drop from the 19-20 to 20-21," said Buncombe County Schools (BCS) Superintendent Dr. Tony Baldwin.

Dr. Baldwin attributes the drop in enrollment to the pandemic, which was a moment of reckoning for many families who decided to switch to homeschooling or other options, like online school, charter school or even private school. He added, the increasing availability of those alternative educational methods, especially with the rise of the internet, is playing a big role in this trend, too.

...

Dianna Nickell's three daughters used to attend Asheville City Schools. Like many families, the pandemic pushed Nickell to try homeschooling her girls.

"We really like it," she told News 13. "So for the near future anyway, I think we're going to stay with homeschooling."

Last year was her first full year homeschooling her kids. Nickell said they've found more flexibility and freedom by making this shift. She said her girls, two of whom are on the spectrum, are now able to explore topics they're passionate about in-depth and do more hands-on learning than a traditional classroom could provide.

...

Jackson County Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Dana Ayers said she respects parents' right to choose what educational method works best for their child.

"I certainly respect a parent's decision to do what they need to do for their own child," Dr. Ayers said. "But I also want to ensure that our local system here in Jackson County offers the best opportunity for a really well-rounded education."

Home schooled all five of mine until they went to college. Successful by many metrics, thank God. It can be done!

Once a family tries homeschooling, they usually do not return to the public school system, although some do end up enrolling their children in private schools. Parents find that it only takes about four hours to go through the material that a public school does in eight, with their child learning and retaining a lot more of the information. Plus, with individual attention, a child excels at those subjects they are interested in, while at the same time gets a better grasp on the subjects in which they struggle. I hope to see more parents taking this route in the future.

One thing about the “pandemic” was that many families found that they really liked having a parent at home and taking a more “hands-on” approach to their children’s education. (In addition to being disgusted by what their children were “learning”). I believe that is one reason that so many workers have left the job market. Many mothers have found that they prefer being at home and that they were fooled by the narrative that to be fulfilled they need to go to work outside the home.

Mark my words. They will come after homeschooling. Give to the HSLDA law group.

I’ll have to look at the school levy on my property taxes to see how much it’s going down this year.

I love it when the consequences of their actions smack them squarely in the face:
The public knew the education system was failing; but did not have the time or inclination to home school.
The education system shut down the schools during COVID, so the public was forced to deal with their children’s education.
It takes 30 days to create a habit. After almost two years of dealing with educating their children at home; the public found that they developed the time and inclination.
