“The view is we need to lengthen the amount of time Taiwan can hold out on its own,” he added. “That’s how you avoid China picking the low-hanging fruit of its ‘fait accompli’ strategy — that they’ve won the day before we’ve gotten there, that is assuming we intervene.”
U.S. officials increasingly emphasize Taiwan’s need for smaller, mobile weapons that can be lethal against Chinese warships and jets while being able to evade attacks, which is central to so-called asymmetric warfare.
“Shoot-and-scoot” types of armaments are popular with the Ukrainian military, which has used shoulder-fired Javelin and NLAW antitank guided missiles and Stinger antiaircraft missiles effectively against Russian forces. Recently, the Ukrainians have pummeled Russian troops with mobile American-made rocket launchers known as HIMARS.

Taiwan’s armed forces, which is tiny (something like 200K authorized active duty soldiers) can’t even come close to meeting its already small, government authorized/funded manpower requirements. 1/3 of units are considered inoperable because of manpower shortage
As an anecdote, I have a long-term business associate in Taiwan. He told me his son just finished his required “national military service” - 4 months total, and the kid didn’t fire a rifle one time.
I wonder who is going to operate all these new weapons?
I suspect Taiwan is thoroughly infiltrated as Hong Kong was.
We may just be stocking weapons for China to use.

Missiles can knock out Taiwan’s infrastructure, and this can be followed up with a blockade.
Taiwan can’t feed itself. It has no energy resources. Once the semiconductor fabs, chemical companies, etc. are gone, Taiwan has no value.
China doesn’t have to invade.

Sounds like the strategy Douglas MacArthur was attempting to execute in the Philippines prior to Pearl Harbor. The problem was not with the strategy, but the lack of funding to adequately pursue it. (Not attempting to start a food-fight over the inadequacies of Douglas MacArthur as a commander.)

The Blockade would be the Straits of Malacca where all Chinese Commercial shipping would be intercepted.
China imports 85% of its energy and 50% of it’s food and AG inputs.
Within 3 months - the Chinese economy would be over. Period.
Great way to give red china our weapons after they take over Taiwan.
That assumes that Indonesia and Malaysia are willing to go to war with China over Taiwan.

Pack it full of weapons, so we can abandon them later.
