I’m reminded of the demagogue Carl Sagan — there are those who basically worship him — who was the original global warming nitwit celebrity, claiming that Saddam’s oil well fire arsons wouldn’t be put out for at least two years (it took about six months, and that includes the sour wells, Red Adair was still alive at the time, and had been putting out Saddam’s arsons in Kuwait for years before the Iraqi invasion) and would cause drought and famine in India, Africa, downtown Atlantic City (I made that one up), the same kinda of groundless Al Gorism that probably ‘inspired’ the grifter, Al Gore.

Back when I was an undergrad minion at the University of Minnesota Supercomputer Center, they had a US government contract to run the US Army High Performance Computing Research Center (AHPCRC). I was one of the sysadmins for the University’s Cray-2 and Connection Machine.

Shortly after Carl Sagan began pushing his nuclear winter doomsday scenario in the media, we were given a rush job from the Army to run a mesoscale atmospheric circulation model. I had a hunch it might have been quickly declassified. I later heard that NASA/Ames and some other HPC sites were also given similar codes to run.

We ran the model and reported back to the Army that there was no significant occlusion of the atmosphere. I think the other HPC sites came to the same conclusion.
