More people want to leave San Francisco than any other city, survey shows

More residents of San Francisco are looking to relocate within the next year than people in any other major metropolitan area, according to U.S. Census data.

Results of the most recent American Housing Survey conducted by the Census Bureau show that about 8% of the city's population plan on moving to a different city, The San Francisco Chronicle reported, while about 18% of residents in the SF metro area plan on moving from their home in the next year.

At 7.2%, the Seattle area was the only metro comparable to San Francisco in terms of people thinking of moving away. Areas such as Chicago and New York came in at 5% and 3.2%, respectively.

Since the start of the pandemic, enough people have left San Francisco and its surrounding cities that the phenomenon is often referred to as the "Bay Area exodus." The area's high price of living and fast-paced lifestyle sent tens of thousands of people on a hunt for greener pastures in more affordable places, sometimes as far as Montana, Texas or Mexico. A Redfin housing report from September showed that more homebuyers left San Francisco than any other metro in July and August.

I visited San Francisco in the 2000s. The areas I saw were still fairly nice.

The next thing you know, all of the San Franciscans will be wading across the Colorado River into Arizona “with flowers in their hair.” We need to get some Border Patrol guys over there right away.

I left the crime
In San Francisco
High on its drugs
It calls to me
To be where
Little hijacked cars
get left outside the bars
The smell of poop
May fill the air
I don’t care...

Sorry, you may not leave to go elsewhere and eff things up. You can leave after you fix your problems in SF.

Yeah, it’s only the high housing prices at work. No other factors come to mind.

What a bunch of drivel. It is the worst managed city in the worst managed state in the entire nation.

Lived in San Francisco from 1994-2016. It is a beautiful city with a lot of great people and nice places to go and top shelf restaurants. The natural beauty is breathtaking. Mountains, fertile valleys, the ocean all within miles of each other. Wine country and redwoods not far away.
Every metropolis has its bad areas and the Bay Area is no different. I never saw one single pile of shit in my neighborhood (Outer Sunset beside Golden Gate Park and the Pacific Ocean) nor in my work and nightlife downtown in the financial district.

I hear that San Francisco was considering changing its name.

They abandoned the idea, however, when they discovered that the name "Needles, California" was already taken.
