Shots Fired In Jones Act Debate
Gcaptain ^ | 10/21/22 | Captain John Konrad

Shots were fired this week when a newly released US Maritime Administration (MARAD) document from 2020 showed that a Department of Transportation (DOT) advisory committee recommended that members of the Cato Institute, a libertarian think tank that’s opposed to the Jones Act, be charged with treason. Treason is a federal crime punishable by death. MARAD did not take action on the recommendation but new threats to the Jones Act are emerging, which may sink the 102-year law.

The documents were part of a freedom of information act (FOIA) request filed by Cato which included recommendations from a March 2020 meeting of the DOT’s Marine Transportation System National Advisory Committee (MTSNAC). It advised the DOT to unequivocally support the Jones Act and “charge all past and present members of Cato and Mercatus Institutes with treason.” MTSNAC also asked the President to “inform the Heritage Institute that he will personally disavow them if they continue to advocate against the Jones Act.”

This quote from Hillary come to mind "I'm sick and tired of people who say that if you debate and disagree with this administration, somehow you're not patriotic. We need to stand up and say we're Americans, and we have the right to debate and disagree with any administration." ― Hillary Rodham Clinton.

It’s no longer not patriotic, it’s TREASON!

Lenin was once asked why he opposed free speech after having supported it. His answer was basically: “Yes, it’s true that I supported free speech, but that was when I was in the opposition”.

Is there any difference between those two?

Many are probably not acquainted with gCaptain. It's a high end publication focusing on all thing merchant marine related. Konrad, the author of this article, is very well known, the publisher of gCaptain and an unlimited tonnage master. His opinions are extremely influential. He fights like hell for the merchant marine industry. All aspects of it.

Several posters had disparaging comments about the Jones Act. I do not share this. Without the Jones Act, the US merchant marine would be extinct. This is a radical national security issue. We need it.

IMO, letting the US merchant marine to wither is one more way the Democrats are sabotaging the US. This is what the OP article is raising the alarm about. It’s

OK....
I give up...
Another article that talks about something that very few people know anything about, without explaining what it is about.
What is the jones act?
Why can people be charged with treason?

A little background, without having to go to a blog, would be very helpful

The Jones Act is a federal law that regulates maritime commerce in the United States. The Jones Act requires goods shipped between U.S. ports to be transported on ships that are built, owned, and operated by United States citizens or permanent residents.

The purpose of the posting this article was to show the thought pattern of our government to accuse those who disagree with Treason! Debate appears to be off the table, straight to prison if you disagree.

The Jones Act is the one saying that only US vessels can transport between US ports.

Agreed 100%!

Most people don't realize that Senator Wesley Jones and Admiral William Benson (Chief of Naval Operations during World War 1 and President of the U.S. Shipping Board) collaborated on writing the Jones Act and pushing it through Congress as a NATIONAL DEFENSE MEASURE!

It's purpose was threefold: 1) Keep the growing imperial Japanese merchant marine from taking over the Washington-Alaska trade routes; 2) Keep foreign-flagged shipping out of domestic U.S. waterways (think Russian trawlers in the Mississippi River!); and 3) maintain the U.S. Merchant Marine as a viable auxiliary to the U.S. Navy in the event of war.

No Jones Act, and no U.S. Merchant Marine!

Yep, it’s in OUR national interest. We need to do more things that are actually in OUR national interest.

And that includes stopping Comrade Putin from re-building the Soviet Union and establishing "multi-polar" global hegemony over the U.S.

Sigh. Treason is defined specifically in the U.S. Constitution. It is making war against the United States and/or giving aid and comfort to its enemies.

If a D.O.T. advisory committee is so ignorant of the Constitution and what treason entails, they shouldn’t be involved with any government agency.

Well said. I've joked that I emailed myself a copy of the US Constitution so that at least somebody in the the government would actually read it.
