The really cool part of the story is just after the end of your excerpt:

"The evening is sold out," I told him, "But I can certainly get you in. And if you come, I will introduce you to 1,200 people, and I promise you a standing ovation!"

He thought about it, and finally agreed to come, was given a front-row seat, and, just as I predicted, when I told the audience about him, the spotlight was shone on him, and virtually all 1,200 people rose and gave him a standing ovation.

In fact, they gave him two.

I've had a few experiences with working class black Americans that was similar. The new racism, the wokeness...I made a comment once in that kind of mixed group about I wish we could all just get along and not care about skin color, and it was like a dam burst with everyone else agreeing. It was like they were relieved that someone was willing to say that out in the open face to face again.

It is sad that it has gotten this bad, but like Dennis, it is way too early to lose hope.

Reminds me of the time, just before the 2008 election, when my daughter was taking me to a restaurant in Philly. We were running late, so she decided to take a shortcut through a very black section of the city. While passing through, I caught sight of a huge billboard with a picture of Obama’s smiling face. Someone had climbed up and drawn a mustache and Van Dyke on it. I thought to myself, “that’s got to be a good omen.” In the event, of course, it wasn’t.

Very similar encounter with a delivery driver. A contractor scheduled curbside delivery of 1250 lbs of construction materials for a 4th floor condo. The driver, a humongous black guy, volunteered to help me hump it to the elevator and into my condo. We started talking about politics and basically agreed about everything. I tipped him the cost of the delivery, which he didn’t know I would do. Great guy. So they are out there.
