I am not a Cher fan, but I remember that for a long time she refused to go on Letterman’s show and he would frequently talk and joke about it on the air. Finally she appeared and he asked her why she had refused before. “Because I thought you were an @$$hole,” she replied.
She was right the first time. I didn’t find him funny, although he did steal my jokes a few times.
