There have been quite a few reactions to Tesla CEO and Chief Twit Elon Musk announcing that checkmarks will be handed out to anyone who signs up for Twitter Blue at $8 a month. The goal seems pretty obvious. Not only will it reduce the number of bots and help identify real accounts, but it’ll also bring in a fair bit of revenue for Twitter
Many blue-check lefties are getting up in arms over the announcement as they now understand they will no longer be the elite Twitter users. Then, there’s naturally the argument that asking for any money for anything will only hurt the poor.
That seems to be AOC’s position. As my colleague, Nick Arama wrote, New York’s increasingly unpopular socialist politician whose entire experience with business includes making margaritas, “lmao’d” at Musk for making free speech cost $8 a month.
Musk’s response was short but hilariously dismissive.
“Your feedback is appreciated, now pay $8.”
But he wasn’t done with her yet. Musk followed up his jab with a haymaker of his own. Heading to AOC’s website, Musk noticed that AOC was charging unreasonable prices for her merch, including $58 for a very ugly sweater.
The point is pretty obvious. Musk wanted to highlight the absurdity of AOC coming after him for charging $8 a month for a service on his website while she is charging far more for far less. Also unspoken is the fact that little miss “tax the rich” is overcharging for clothing.
To be clear, Musk isn’t charging $8 for free speech as AOC claimed, it’s effectively to give you more benefits to the site, including a verification badge, now available to anyone for less than $10 a month.
