UNESCO says a third of World Heritage glaciers will vanish by 2050

A third of global glaciers located at World Heritage sites will disappear by 2050, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) warned on Thursday.

Among the glaciers to vanish will be those at Yellowstone National Park, Yosemite National Park and Mount Kilimanjaro, according to UNESCO.

While those glaciers will melt regardless of efforts to limit temperature increases, it is possible to save the remaining two thirds of glaciers at these 50 sites, the organization stressed in a new report.

But to do so, the authors cautioned, global heating must not exceed 1.5 degrees Celsius, or 2.7 degrees Fahrenheit, above pre-industrial levels.

I visited the Exit Glacier National Park in Alaska.

There is a long winding road to Park HQ and the trail to the toe of the glacier.

There is a sign indicating that in 1896, the toe was 2 miles from the present location. As you wind down that road there are other signs with the dates of the toe location.

The US Government has been aware of glacier erosion for more than a hundred years.

Ditto glacier National Park. There is awareness of glacial melting prior to the human inventions and large population.

A couple of years ago they had to change the signs at Glacier National Park due to the glaciers not getting the word and stubbornly still being sort of, you know, icy. They were supposed to be gone by 2020. From the article:

Its signs will now say: “When they [the glaciers] will completely disappear depends on how and when we act. One thing is consistent: The glaciers in the park are shrinking.” But in truth the new signs are no more accurate than the old ones. First, some of the glaciers have expanded, not shrunk, in the last decade.
