Diesel shortage should not prompt panic, says AAA

ori Weaver Hawkins with AAA says the country currently has about a 25-day supply of diesel. But that metric has been misinterpreted by some.

“We may have a 25-day supply of diesel, but that doesn’t mean in 25 days we’re going to run out of diesel,” said Weaver Hawkins.

Weaver Hawkins says that would only be the case if diesel stopped being produced. But reports have prompted some panic among consumers, leading them to buy in large quantities.

“That does cause problems,” Weaver Hawkins said. “It will cause disruption.”

She says diesel producers are trying to play catch-up to reach a normal supply of between 35 and 40 days, after so many refineries shut down during the pandemic.

True, but always remember: Clean, effective fusion power generation is only 20 years away!

And we can all freeze and starve in the interim.

I was on the PA turnpike today. Two of the three service centers I passed had digital “NO FUEL” signs.

Yea, sure, won’t affect us at all.

Aren’t we supposed to run out today?

There is rather too much talk of refinery scarcity as the cause of diesel scarcity.

Remember how the world of oil works. Crude has constituent parts . . . gasoline, kerosene (jet fuel), diesel, asphalt, etc.

Not all crude has the same ratio of content.

Since shale became a thing, the definition of crude itself became fuzzy.

Bottom line: Crude from offshore sources and conventional onshore sources is diesel rich. Light Tight Oil (shale) is not.

You don’t have to have refinery scarcity to have diesel scarcity. You can have diesel scarcity because the oil being refined doesn’t have much diesel in it.

25 day “cushion” if production stops for some reason. Not literally 25 days left.

“ 25 day “cushion” if production stops for some reason.”

Like, say, a Biden diktat? You know, “no coal”, “no drilling”.

Let’s see: Exploration —> Land leasing —> Drilling —> Refining —> Delivery —> Retail Sale

Didn’t some old ignorant anti-American coot just say “No more drilling”? Didn’t that same old coot stop federal leases for drilling? And the same old coot shut down oil pipeline construction? And drain our Strategic Petroleum Preserve to buy some votes?

I wonder what the root cause might be.

Like as in only 3 days worth of reserve food on the shelves if trucks stop delivering...

So a few bulk purchases and the system's gonna crash but everything is okie dokie. Just don't take more than your share.

I bought two 12 packs of mega roll(=36 rolls) TP when I saw empty shelves in Italy. A month later, everyone else stocked up and within a few days, it was gone for close to a month so I guess we have a 25 day supply of most things. Comforting to know.

Tucker really screwed up when he was telling us all that we would be out I’d diesel in 28 days.

If we run out of diesel I think we run out of food and a lot of other things that we need day to day.

Of course Biden could shut down diesel production. It’s hard, but not impossible, to believe he is that stupid.

This is more to the point. If you can't but fuel, you can't buy fuel.

If you don’t use Diesel we’ll be OK. Don’t panic and use Diesel or we’ll run out! This is how it’s always worked.
