‘We were completely exposed’: Russian conscripts say hundreds killed in attack
Guardian UK ^ | 11/7/2022 | Pjotr Sauer

Hours after Aleksei Agafonov arrived in the Luhansk region on 1 November as part of a battalion of new conscripts, his unit were handed shovels and ordered to dig trenches throughout the night.

Their digging, which they took turns to do because of the lack of available shovels, was abruptly interrupted in the early hours of the next day as Ukrainian artillery lit up the sky and shells started raining down on Agafonov and his unit.

“A Ukrainian drone first flew over us, and after that their artillery started to pound us for hours and hours, nonstop,” Agafonov, who survived the shelling, told the Guardian in a phone interview on Monday.

“I saw men being ripped apart in front of me, most of our unit is gone, destroyed. It was hell,” he said, adding that his unit’s commanders abandoned them just before the shelling started.

Agafonov was called up on 16 October alongside 570 other conscripts in Voronezh, a city in the south-west of Russia, as part of Vladimir Putin’s nationwide mobilisation push that has seen more than 300,000 men drafted to go and fight in a war that the Kremlin calls its “special military operation”.

After the attacks stopped, Agafonov, with roughly a dozen other soldiers, retreated from the forest outside the Luhansk town of Makiivka to the nearby Russian-controlled city of Svatove. In Svatove, Agafonov and his group moved into a deserted building, trying to contact other mobilised soldiers who had been with him that night.

According to Agafonov’s estimates, only 130 draftees out of the 570 survived the Ukrainian attack, which would make it the deadliest known incident involving conscripts since the start of the mobilisation drive at the end of September.

If the Russian situation were hopeless, the propaganda would not be necessary.

There are also rumors from Ukraine that Sullivan has pressed Zelensky to launch a Kherson campaign as soon as possible. Zelensky is said to have agreed to do so.

But the Ukrainian army does not want to do that - at least not now. The Russian troops in the area have been reinforced. The fields are muddy and can not be crossed by heavy vehicles. Russian artillery attacks destroy equipment pre-positioned for the attack before it is ready to come near the front line.

The Ukrainian military has for weeks tried probing attacks in the Kherson region. These had no significant results while the attacking units had high losses. The units deployed around the region have been there since early October or longer. The Military Land deployment map shows only one unit that arrived just five days ago. The 98th Azov battalion, one of the fascist volunteer forces, has been positioned in the back of 128th Mountain Assault Brigade which, in recent weeks, has had some of the most serious losses.

The use of such 'nationalist' forces to prevent the retreat of exhausted front line units has been a regular occurrence in this war.

Ukraine has for weeks had no success on the battle field. Washington wants it to show such a success so that it can tell its allies that the war can be won by the Ukrainian side. The push for an attack on Kherson is again part of the overall campaign to convince Europeans that they should sustain the efforts to arm and support Ukraine.

The campaign is misleading. Ukraine is losing the war badly. But the U.S. wants to fight Russia down to the last Ukrainian - and down to the last Euro.

ONE day from a crucial midterm and all Marcus can do is post Ukrainian war porn.

Does anyone believe he and his ilk are really conservatives?

Give a poll Marcus that shows the war in Ukraine in among the top five issues for even five percent of Americans.

“If the Russian situation were hopeless, the propaganda would not be necessary.”

Well, if it was hopeless for this unit, broadcasting it might affect the morale of other Russian units. It’s called PsyOps.

Putin is the biggest killer of Russians since Stalin. Who is one of his heroes.
Just call him Vlad the merciless.

Stalin sent Russians to the gulags. Vlad sends the mobiks to the Ukrainian meatgrinder with poor weapons and no shovels to dig trenches. The Russians should buy more shovels from Iran, since they cannot manufacture them.

Well, it’s a crucial midterm for we Americans; for you Russians, not so much.

The best thing these deranged, stunted wackos can do to further their cause (whatever that is) is go out tomorrow and vote for Catatonic Joe’s blue team. Pull the lever for the straight ticket.

Kazan! Can you look out your window and give us a report on the Rus army mutiny in Kazan? Thanks. Tell them that us Freepers support them, and that Vlad can go eff himself.

“Everything in the gaslight press is a lie.”

Then you can ignore it, and not be bothered about it. You can just concentrate on getting all your news from Russia.

I can’t wait to get out and vote for JD Vance. He’s promised to cutoff funding for the Ukraine “project”.

Good for him. There aren’t many out there who aren’t afraid.

None of them up there have the balls to mention Minsk II, the nucleus of the entire situation.

Biden is in a panic now because he gave Putin the green light to invade Ukraine in the “minor incursion.”

And Biden, Macron and Scholz told Zelensky to flee to Poland when the invasion started and Zelensky told all three of them no.

Putin the loser effed things up for Biden, Macron and Scholz and Biden, Macron and Scholz effed things up for Putin.

There will be GOP investigations of Biden’s Green Light to Putin as well as Putin’s bribes to the Bidens that eclipsed any payments from Burisma.

So funny that all the Putlerists here have left in the face of overwhelming evidence that Russia is getting its clock cleaned in a war they themselves started is is to scream that it’s all lies and gaslighting.
