My political science degree never prevented me from getting a job in the IT field. When I first enrolled at University of Chicago, the school didn’t even HAVE a “Computer Sciences” degree. The programming courses were under MATH. The REAL propeller heads were math majors.

At the time, there was a philosophical understanding that “Computer Science” was not an academic discipline in the same way that Math, Physics, Chemistry and Biology are, as those are based on preexisting reality and not on artificial constructs. Having a degree in Computer Science at the time would be like offering a degree in “Electrical Engineering”, closer to a trade degree.

My accounting degree has paid the bills and put clothes on my 3 kids' backs. Now that I'm 68, I sometimes envision a do-over, in the form of a degree in viticulture. As great as that sounds, wine makers work their butts off.

For example, I lived in a town along the Mosel River during my tour in Germany. Over 2/3 of the grapes grown there grow on slopes greater than 60 degrees: nearly everything has to be done by hand because of that.

My degree came in handy in the Army, too. My last 18 months in Germany, I was the Battalion Supply Officer (S-4). Word travelled fast that I had the degree, that my knowledge of financial management, budgeting, and related disciplines far exceeded theirs. IOW, higher hq rarely messed with us.

The longest job I lasted at was about 4 years. Usually it was a case of management wanting to "move in a different direction", and we all know what that means. I even was a casualty of a "reorganization" after being at a small company in a bookkeeping role for 13 months. After upgrading to QuickBooks Online, the owners decided my job could be done cheaper by a less expensive bookkeeper.

My plans to kick back and draw unemployment until December were brought to a crashing halt during the middle of September. I interviewed for a newly created Tax Accountant position at a large real estate company. I was the 15th person interviewed for the position, over a 4 month period. LOL, the HR director calls me "the Unicorn", they had such difficulty filling the job.

It's been great so far, a fantastic, non-woke atmosphere, complete with Christmas parties, and Secret Santas. None of this "holiday party" nonsense. It's been a revelation: most of the officers live outside of Dallas, my two bosses reside in Florida, making it to the office on alternating weeks.

The company uses QuickBooks for its accounting, but it's QB Desktop. When the CEO polled us about a potential move to QB Online, the vote was unanimously AGAINST it.

Great place for my "last rodeo".
